I have some sassafras boards that I got from I don’t remember where and was thinking maybe I would try using it in a segmented bowl.
Any of you guys ever turned sassafras? If I were to do this what king of wood would you suggest as a companion?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I consider this to be a pest species, at best. Others may have found a way to use the lumber. I have many sassafras trees in the small woods behind my house. Wish they weren’t there. I have never found a use for them as wood stock with the crazy corkscrew growth pattern. You can’t even burn it in a fireplace due to the incredible popping and sparks. Many dollars from my wallet to have dead trees removed.

Smells good, but understand that one of the main components that contribute to the “root beer” smell is safrole. There has been considerable debate, and the jury is still out, but safrole is still considered a potential human carcinogen. At least use a good dust mask to protect you from breathing in any dust.

I have made several projects (mostly jewelry style boxes) from sassafras. Growing up we did not see many large sas. trees but in the last few years have bought many nice straight grained 8 to 10” wide by 9’ boards from my local sawmill in central Ky. I have only turned one seg bowl with it. Looks good with either walnut or maple. It is rather soft so sharp tools are a must. I have had no reaction to the wood however I do catch most all the dust as it is made. I do love the smell. Good luck with the bowl.

Well it looks like I have one negative and one positive comment. Thanks both of you. To Kazooman I remember well my Dad referring to sassafras as giant weeds on the farm.

To poospleasures, when I get time I am going to take a crack at making a segmented bowl from the board I have.
