This may be a stupid question but its all new to me ;) I’m about to purchase a face vise for my newly built workbench (pics to come sometime in the next week or so) and I’m having difficulty deciding what type to get.

I’m deciding between these two:

1) 9’’ Quick-Release Wood Vise: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10709

and

2) Heavy Duty Quick Release Front Vise: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=21523

I’m trying to figure out why you would want the bolts halfway up the vise like in #2? Doesn’t that limit clamping to short pieces? But at the same time this is typically the one I see in woodworking videos. Which should I go for? How big a clamp do I even want? Are there any other vises I should consider? I’m planning on making furniture such as night stands, coffee table, picture frames, jewelry box or two, etc. Thanks for all the help LJ’s.

Eric

Someone please help, I have the same questions.
Eric, there was a recent review of bench vises. I believe it was in Fine Woodworking, not sure. I don’t the details and can’t find my copy. If I find it, I’ll try to get you a source.

Just looked at the ads. The second one is just the hardware and you can put any size jaws on you want. May have to drop the mounting points a little but most of the vise work I do with wood utilizes a bench dog so the depth of the jaws is of little consideration. A tall jaw also allows more flexing and twisting. Hope this helps.

The FWW – Taunton’s 2010 Tool Review Magazine has the vise review talked about above.
My personal preference would be the 2nd choice. You can make the jaws about any size you want.
I’ve had problems with the release type used on #1. My 2 cents.

John, Thanks for the input. I’m taking a much closer look at #2 vise. It looks like it will mount perfectly on the bench I’m working on now. BTKS

Thanks for the inputs. I just purchased a #2 from Rockler online since they are having a 20% off single item online promotion until Wednesday.

Well I installed the Heavy Duty Quick Release Front Vise: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=21523
yesterday. Installation was smooth, but I do find the quick release nut to be a little tricky. I can open the quick release nut easily, but when ever I try to close it to reengage the threading, it seems to not line up with the quick screw threads and requires me to hold it in place while I turn the screw a few times. Any tricks to this I’m missing?

1st thing is to call Rockler Customer Service about the problem. They are very good about taking care of their problems.
