I offered to make a family member an item of his choice (as a thank you for letting me use his table saw the past 2 years) and he chose a coffee scoop.

“Rosewood with Ebony stripes,” he joked. Then he picked Cherry.

So, I think I’d like to surprise him and send him what he joked about. So, I’m officially in the market for some sort of Rosewood (unspecified, whew!) and Ebony. If anyone has tiny scraps they’d sell, I’d happily pay shipping plus some if it would save money over buying new.

Or, if you have ideas for good places to buy small quantities of exotic lumber, I’d be happy to hear those recommendations as well.

I don’t have anything that exotic. I have some poplar, hickory, and maple, but that’s it.

If no one can help you out, my local shop sells exotics by the foot.

if you could be a little more specific on the sizes you need, I may be able to help. I use a lot of ebony, not sure how much rosewood I have laying around.

If you have one of the boutiques near you (Rockler, Woodcaft), you can pick up some 1/4” thick pieces that you can laminate together to make that coffee scoop. However, I’ll bet money that if you made a coffee scoop out of any nice wood, he’ll probably like it. Just look at some of the spoon carving aficionados’ samples here, there are some stellar examples.
