There is a Belsaw planer for sale on Craigslist. I believe it is a model 984. They are asking $900, apparently very lightly used. It has the ripsaw attachment, comes with extra knives, unused tongue and groove cutter heads. Is this a reasonable deal? Is this a good model? Any reason to runaway from the thought of purchasing it?

I have an older 12” Belsaw planer that I love! Despite the older Belsaw utilitarian appearance, it is an excellent planer. No “snipe” or other problems. As to the price, it seems a tad steep to me, but anything on Craigs List it usually overpriced. I would bargain it back to $600 or less and offer cash, no checks.

The 984 is a 12” planer/molder, and they are built like a tank. The saw attachment makes them really useful for shaping custom sized pieces all in one pass. With all the added extras, $900 might be a reasonable price, but it’s hard to judge without seeing it. Here is a picture of one from the vintagemachinery site:

AFAIK, Belsaw is still in business, so you should be able to get information, manuals, parts, etc… for it fairly easily.

Cheers,
Brad
