Sun Brand Random Orbital Discs
Bought these at the wood show. We have gone through 6 boxes of them. However I didn’t count how many times a disc went flying. The velcro/hook and loop on the back doesn’t seem to stick that well. It’s not that the pad was worn out, one of the sanders we tried them on was new. For the most part they work, but you get what you pay for.
PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made
Got this vise with a starter kit from PSI. About a 100 pens later it has come apart twice and caused at least 4-6 students to ruin blanks due to moving while drilling. What seems to happen is the ring spring clamp (I’m not sure what it is called) keeps popping off when tightened. It took 4 hands and a ring separator pliers to get it back on, and that is not an exaggeration. I think it would have been okay in my home workshop, but definitely not high output shops. Called customer ...
Grizzly 8" jointer comparisions
It is not too often someone other than a writer from a woodworking magazine gets to buy 2 different models of the same tool and compare them. I looked through the Grizzly catalog and website and did some paper comparision. I chose the G0586 for the school shop. It was $100 cheaper and had handwheel adjustments for both the tables and the fence. Once I got down to Springfield to pickup the tools, I went shopping for myself (this was planned) My first intention was to get the same jointe...
DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer
I have had the opportunity to use about 4 different planers. I owned a Ryobi 12.5” for about a year and returned it because rollers wouldn’t work, They bought a Ridgid and it lasted about 3 months, same problem (Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee are same corp) Finally I bucked up and bought Dewalt after seeing this at the wood show. However I am not the average weekend woodworker being a shop teacher so minimum duty tools just dont’ cut it for me. I also had a Delta 12.5”...
I would like a review of the Timesaver Speedsander
I am putting together a proposal for my school shop to get a wide belt sander for the upcoming school year. Had my eye on a grizzly, however prefer local reps and us made Timesaver. Looking at the Speedsander series for about $9k, the grizzly about $10k, or the timesaver 1300 series – $14K+4K setup. I obviously want the Timesaver 1300, but at half the cost I can get the speedsander if all goes well with approvals. I would like any reviews I can get on any of the 3 listed. Thank...
Spiral cutters worth the cost!
I was recently able to obtain a 5hp Grizzly 1033X 20” Planer for my school shop. Our old 20” planer has been around for 10 years and has seen better days. I convinced admin that this was the way to go and the extra cost would be worth it to cut on noise levels. I have always heard of this but have never experienced it until just a month ago. Boy were they right! We now have 2 planers in the shop. The spiral cutter is quieter standing next to the machine than standing in the ...
