Began first furniture project in 2006 and was hooked. Play in a driveway/garage workshop. Great on sunny days, and bit problematic when it rains. I have a small workbench in my office for rainy day messing around. Most stationary tools are used in the garage and hand tool (corded and not) done in driveway. Even to use stationary tools, I have to roll carts and benches out of garage to have room.
Most work is of my own (though heavily influenced by work of others) design. Have made a few small tables from magazine articles as learning exercises.
Semi-retired graphic artist and typographer by trade. Early days in engineering and quality control type activities until I got that elusive engineering degree. Then started my own typesetting business which morphed over the years as technology changed.
Taught graphics and computer skills at my own school as well as courses at local community college and a few UC Extension classes. Did a bit of travel writing once business tapered (ok, crashed) off and daughter went off to college.
Enjoy woodworking for its hands-on quality, problem solving opportunities, challenge of matching design visions with craftsmanship limitations and growth, and of course, the excuse to buy and hold very cool tools.
