I hate to disappoint you all but I got one too and she really sent you one of these letters by mistake since I am going to respond first. By the way I decided to go ahead and put a new Sawstop on order. I figure that my “cut” should be enough to pay for one.

Help me please!!!! I know all of you people are loving and caring wood workers, and wouldn’t want to see your fellow LJ in a desperate way, but I must plead for your help. I need more WOOOOOODDD!!! It has gotten so bad that I have started gluing sawdust together, that has been donated to me by the horse stables down the road. Please help, that sawdust was used by the horses as bedding, and I am having trouble with keeping a good color consistency and it smells a little. Whew, a fan helps, but you can see that this is not what a woodworker wants to go through to satisfy his addiction. If you can send me…........ say….....well maybe $4,000,000.00 I can buy some more lumber. I promise to pay you, some of it back, ASAP, or 25 years from now, which ever comes first. I live in Nige….. , well I’m thinking of living in Nigeria, or Detroit, so you can find me there, no problems when you need your money back, I’ll be there for you, you can count on that. Oh, and ignore the picture of me…... I mean my friend up in the corner of this message. Thats not me, I’m much better looking, many people mistake me for Pierce Bronson or carrot top if I had a few too many.

The weird thing is, the so-called “Nigerian” scam, which it’s called whether or not it claims or indeed comes from nigeria, is not only the most common “phishing” scam, but overall it’s by far the most successful internet based scam! It works because they send out millions of phishing emails, and over the course of a year, can get several! Success rates claimed vary from .1 to .03%, but like the LA times story below says, in 2006 290 people REPORTED (meaning you know there’s more than didn’t even report it!) losses, median loss of $5,000.
Plus, they’re now branching into things like puppies! Read the aussie article for that…Personally, I found the wiki article on it pretty fascinating.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud
http://articles.latimes.com/2006/mar/02/local/me-nigerian2
http://www.news.com.au/business/money/story/0,25197,25039150-14327,00.html
“We have confirmed losses just in the United States of over $100 million in the last 15 months,” said Special Agent James Caldwell, of the Secret Service financial crimes division. “And that’s just the ones we know of. We figure a lot of people don’t report them.”

Be carefull of another one that I’ve received a few times (Not via LJ). They want to by your products, usually they are too agressive and too quick to buy. Will even give you a credit card number. After securing the sale they tell you their international shipping company takes money orders or transfers only. They want you to transfer them the shipping for them and you can put it on their card.

I assume the scam is you get a charge back on the credit card for being stolen and then you are out the couple hundred dollars for shipping charged your paid. You never ship the product so your not out there, but time wasted if you’ve built it.

Tips:
Don’t pay 3rd party shipping
If you take Credit Cards run a deposit at the beginning of building the project, so that there is time to see if a charge back comes.
If it is too good to be true, It probly is

I can usually tell in the first sentence if it is a scam. The usually address you formally and have broken english.

A church up the road from me got taken for about 350K. The pastor believed it and got a lot of his church members to keep funding him through all of the steps. He actually went to Nigeria (or where ever) to pick up his money that was colored black and with an expensive chemical it would turn back into US dollars. He got black construction paper.

Their story with other prominent people taken The church story is Dec 6, 2006.

It’s hard to believe in this age of computers that people still fall for these phisihng emails, especially the “we lost your information, please re enter it” emails. I just delete without opening. Any reputable company would NEVER ask for your login, password, SS#, or personal info through an email….NEVER. They try to get you nervous by saying your account will be closed/deleted/frozen if you don’t comply. I really think our country needs to crack down on all this internet hacking from foreign country’s. Allot of these attacks like the ones from Nigeria, and China are actually funded by the government. We need to get tough on these country’s and hold them accountable for policing this trash that emanates from their domains. I have a Friend who works as an internet security specialist for a large financial institution and he tells me they get attacked DAILY by hackers from China. It’s like an electronic war waging constantly…

A year ago or so there was a story in an Atlanta magazine about a black man and his wife who “invested” in one of these scams. When they realized that they got scammed they then went to Nigeria, checked in with an embassy and were never heard from again. He was upset that some black brothers would scam a black man.

Some Texas lawyers got an email wanting them to collect a commercial account. They took the job. The “bad” company sent them a check which was deposited in the attorney’s escrow account. A week later they “verified” that the check had cleared and wired 2/3rds of the money off to the client in China or the Phillippines or wherever. Then the bad news hit.

Now they are suing the bank for falsely verifyiing that the funds were good.

We got two cashiers checks in our office on a deal. We called the issuing banks who advised us that one was check number 2315 with that number and the other was check number 1584 on the other check number. They came to us by FedEx so you know that FedEx got taken on the fees, too.

Some of our local banks have big signs warning of this type scam.

I am not sure how the spyware would work on LJ.

If a deviant individual sets up an account on LJ and then does a cut and paste message to several of the members, the spyware would not work in that situation. My computer is set up to accept messages from LJ and so it would be allowed in.

Even if my preferences were set so that I had to retrieve the LJ message I would get it at that time.
