One of the greatest things I enjoy as a professional woodworker and remodeling contractor, are the connections that I have with other artisans and craftsmen. By surrounding myself with other artists, it constantly challenges and expands my creative vision. Among those is a good friend and metal working talent, Andy Parent. Andy’s unique vision for metal work has greatly influenced my own ideas for design.

That’s Andy sitting on the King’s Throne which was under construction at the time. (I made all of the wood components.)

Andy’s metal working business, Iron Ox Inc, is located just down the street a couple blocks from my own shop. With his shop being so close, we see each other on a pretty regular basis, and the conversations we have are very stimulating as the sparks of creativity fly.

I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate on some projects with Andy, and we often call on each other to hash out design ideas or to gain a different perspective from a fresh set of eyes.

Andy has a great balance of technical ability for working metal and artistic madness. If you met him personally, within the first few minutes you would understand the artistic madness comment, but this picture of him with Poseidon’s Trident might give you a glimpse.

To get another look at Andy, his nephew has produced this video as part of his college cinematography course: The Moments We Steel by Jared West.

OK, I am unable to embed video here in the blog. It seems like embedding video does not work as easily as it used to so you will have to use the link. (I find this very frustrating.)

Andy has had a positive and energizing effect on myself as an artist and craftsman. You can check out some of his work at his site: Iron Ox.

To stay energized as an artist, make friends with other artists. It really keeps the mojo flowing.

Your friend in the shop,

Todd A. Clippinger

UPDATE

Andy sent me some pictures so you could see the final installation of the King’s Chairs and some fireplace chairs with ottoman. -Thanks Andy!

If art is art than artists are artists…no wonder why the two of you hit it off. I love the chair. Sorry I wish I could help you with the video.

You said a mouthful when you said ‘fresh set of eyes”. A number of times I have called upon my chip carving mentor for those eyes and after talking to him I was like, I knew that why didn’t I see that. LOL! Thanks for sharing!

Napaman – I forgot to mention, I did the wood for the King’s throne chair. We did a pair of them as part of a larger set of furniture, all of which I did the wood components.

Roger – I always appreciate the level of of work you do. Just by your success as a woodworker, I would have no doubt you have mentors and other artists that influence you as well, and you understand fully what I shared.

That trident rocks! Always good to surround yourself with other creative folks, no matter what they do.

I remember you mentioning Andy a couple of times before.
It’s nice to have a friend with creative juices, and talent to make it materialize.

Andy’s got a gift, no doubt. Kind of guy I’d like to have a beer and a nice chat with. Looks like a good partnership for you, Todd.

Is there a pic of that finished throne somewhere?

Don – I will have to see if I can get a finished photo of the King’s Throne. He actually made 2 of them for a basement bar area in a big log home in North Dakota.

Sitting in the chair gives a sense of power. Here I am sentencing one of my minions to no TV and lots of woodworking!

I just posted an update to the entry above to share the final images of the furniture design of Andy Parent. Being around Andy is a great inspiration to what I do, and getting to collaborate – KaBAM! The creative sparks really fly!
