My shop is 16×24. I had the structure contracted but did all the finish work myself: electrical, insulation, walls, ceiling, and floor epoxy.

- Electrical is 60 amp service with a main breaker panel in the shop. This is plenty, even when running the A/C unit which is 240. I’m sure I have more outlets and circuits than necessary but I don’t like power strips. I was very deliberate in dividing my power into individual circuits so I can run my compressor, dust collector, table saw, and one more tool on individual circuits at the same time. I had it all permitted and inspected.
- I calculated the lighting requirements using industrial standards. I ended up with nine 4-foot, 2-lamp T12 fixtures. The lighting seems perfect in there since I populated the shop with my tools and have completed a couple of projects
- I used OSB for the walls and ceiling and insulated the entire shop. It stayed a very comfortable temperature throughout the last winter and summer months. The OSB is painted with oil-based Kilz and helps with better light distribution.
- I painted the floor with gray epoxy. Mainly because it makes stuff easier to find if you drop small parts on the floor. It looks neat too!
- I have a single insulated garage door with an opener and outside keypad. I really didn’t need the opener except that it makes it convenient for my son and other family members to be able to get in without a key.

I posted pictures with the shop populated. I have 3 benches, cabinet space, DC, miter saw, bandsaw, drill press, sanders, router table, bench grinder, table saw, planer, jointer, and compressor. Everything is on mobile bases, most of which I built myself.

You got that right Wayne! The unit I put in is A/C and heat. It does a great job at both.

Thanks Moke! I would have made it 24×24 but it would have infringed on my septic lines. :( But I have all my tools on mobile bases so it works out fine. Besides, it may not be the biggest shop but it turned out great for me!

Nice shop Todd. You with TVA by chance? I built my shop a number of years ago for my retirement and I am totally out of control but happy as a lark. Like yourself, I did a lot of the work myself. You may want to check out my shop writeup(http://lumberjocks.com/RogerM/workshop) as I put in a lot of ideas that you may find useful. Send me a message if you have questions.

Roger I’m not with TVA but I know a lot of people who are (at Browns Ferry). I work on stuff I can’t talk about. :) You got a really nice shop! I do like some of your ideas. Between projects I will be building another wall cabinet or two.
