David Marks Tour #1: David Marks Shop Tour

no previous part Part 1 of David Marks Tour series Part 2: David Marks Gallery Tour »

I know there are a lot of Woodworks fans in the LJ community, so I figured this would be a fun series to post here. Last summer, on our Gadget Station delivery trip, we decided to stop and visit the one and only David Marks. If you’re not familiar with David, he is an incredible woodworker, and used to host a show on HGTV and the DIY Network called Woodworks. But the show has been over for nearly 5 years and David has moved on to bigger and better things. While we were there, he was kind enough to give us a nice shop tour. This is pure gold for any big Woodworks fans out there!

Also, David recently released his “Scrapers” DVD. It contains everything you need to know to properly sharpen card scrapers, cabinet scrapers, and gooseneck scrapers. I watched this for the first time last week and I instantly felt like I was watching a new episode of Woodworks (only more REAL!) You can pick the DVD up here.

Thanks, Marc. This was a nice look inside David’s shop.

Wow! That is a nice tour! I like to see him in a little more relaxed setting and actually having the time to talk about what ever it is he wants to talk about in-depth. Thanks!

That was a great tour, I love the woodworks series! I wish they would give David another show contract. I can’t wait to see part #2. I wonder if David still can rock the Drums?

Mark your intimate relationship and I mean this with all due respect really shows through in this tour. I can only dream of knowing such a legend. You don’t happen to know Sam Maloof by chance,I would love to tour his shop.

After meeting David in person, I always found it funny to watch him in his old shows. David is a relaxed, t-shirt wearing, coffee-drinking woodworker with a vision and a dream. On the show, he was who the producers wanted him to be. The fact that David even gave me the time of day, years ago, when I approached him with my own dream says a LOT about his character. And I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to call him a friend.

And yes PKP, he can still rock the skins! In fact, you’ll see some of his playing in the next video. I even had a chance to jam on his set that he has upstairs in his gallery. That, however, you won’t see in the next video, lol.

Hey Bob. Humility happens to be one of my favorite characteristics about David. You might like this (non-woodworking) article I read recently: Humility

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I will send David a link to this thread so he can see all the great comments!

Marc, David is a great guy and very knowledgeable. He has put in his time. He does phenomenal work and has studied a great deal. His drive to constantly push the envelope and try new things is admirable. Can’t wait to see the next segment.

You know it’s really good to see David on screen again. I think he really has a lot left to show, and amaze us with. I build a lot of New Yankee projects, but that is because Norm has really made them simple, and easy. I wish I had the talent, and vision of David Marks to attempt one of his projects, especially the veneering. Ahh, maybe one day. Thanks for the update on David, Marc!! You know, he’ll be here in Houston this month I believe to give a lesson on finishing at our local Woodcraft store. Maybe I’ll scrape up enough cash for tuition. Finishing is another skill David has perfected!

Marc,
Thanks a lot for the video. It was like having a new episode to watch I miss Davids show immensely and it was nice to see him in such a relaxed atmosphere. He didn’t need to show us that 36” bandsaw though-LOL Reckon he could use that 36” bandsaw and to do some bandsaw boxes? I’d love to see him cut out that turtle toy box he made on one of the old shows. I think you and David both have the necessary humor to make wood working enjoyable. I’m really looking forward to the next episode! Thanks again guys and may yours tools always be as sharp as you are!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

Personally, I was most impressed with the horizontal front leever, on the workbench. If anyone else here has a grasp of the body tension it takes to pull that off, his woodworking begins to look amateur. How old is he anyway?

I wonder why his show was canceled. It was by far the best woodworking show on TV. I still watch old repeats :)
