French Cleat Wall Storage System
A French cleat is as ingenious as it is simple. It involves securing a strip of wood with a 45 degree bevel to the wall, and then securing an opposing beveled strip on the back of a cabinet or anything you want to hang. Its incredibly strong an...

I checked out your site, & I think you’re doing a great job. It should really help those that are starting out in woodworking. I think it will even help us old timers that have forgotten a lot of things, & also learn some new stuff. The PC is a great learning tool. Keep up the good work.

Marc, I’ve enjoyed veiwing your pod cast. I wish you would have used a board with a little more cupping and/or twist in your pod cast on the jointer. The board you used was something that most of us could do with a hand plane. It was very informative for someone who has never done it and that is good. Keep it coming!! Thanks.

Scott, if you have DIY, it looks like they’re doing a three-fer of Woodworks on Saturday! And two of them are on Arts and Crafts pieces… Man, I love TIVO.
But I hear David was considering making some more full-length DVDs. Marc, I would think you might have some interactions with David still on a more personal level? I thought he was going to do that since Woodworks was cancelled… is it still cancelled, and they’re just rerunning shows? Or did he get signed on for another season? What’s the scoop?

Hey Ethan. The unfortunate scoop is that David is pretty much done with TV. Woodworks has been out of production for years and last I heard, there was no possibility of new episodes. But as you can see, DIY is milking Woodworks for all its worth. The whole thing turned out to be a pretty raw deal for David. But then again, the fame and notoriety he received is what allowed him to make a career out of appearances and teaching. So I guess he is making lemon aid from lemons.
He is making DVD’s, but they are coming out slowly. He currently has two videos: one on chemical patination (from the 80’s) techniques and one on jigs and fixtures. You can buy them at www.djmarks.com
Hopefully he will be able to make more DVD’s soon.

Cool (about the three-fer on DIY) we don’t have it, but I think my in-laws do. I’ll need a break from the rest of the fall-clean up I need to finish before the snow comes (finally) on Sunday.

Yeah, I’d read he didn’t get the best end of the stick with that deal and he was planning on making more in-depth DVDs, instead. Chemical patination isn’t really my thing, but I might check out the DVD on jigs and fixtures.
Actually… maybe I’ll put in a request for our guild to buy a copy for their library.
Thanks for the info, though!

Hey Marc, I love your podcasts, they are so funny and I get alot out of them. I started watching them about october of last year, and I watched every sigle episode you have in about a week. All of the episodes you do teaches me about diffrent woods, tools, and pretty much anything else there is to know. I know that you had an apprenticeship with David Marks as well. I appriciate alot of his work. You both use alot of the same techniques in doing things. I can’t wait to see how that end table will turn out. By the way I think you shuld definetly use glass for the top. It will give it alot of class I think. Thanks.

I really look forward to the podcast; it’s like a healthy combination of Norm (whirring routahs… everything always fits together first time…) and St. Roy (we get to hear the clatter of an 1860’s Sheffield tenon saw hitting the bricks…) Can you tell me why my wife relates to Nicole so much?

Hi Marc, I wonder if you could help with a question on laying endgrain flooring. I saw Tom Porter redwood floor and my son is in the process of doing the same thing for our kitchen. We are cutting 4 X 4 douglas fir tiles and getting all of the products ready that we need. I saw Tom used a mixture of sawdust and acrylic for grouting the tiles. What kind of acrylic should we use that will provide for enough flexibility in the grouting? And can we just use the maustic and lay the tile and not worry about adding a layer of plyboard or particle board? We are tearing up the linoleum and the particle board layer in order to lay the new floor. I sure would appreciate any advise you have to offer.

Hi Sue. Honestly your question is a bit out of my league. I haven’t done many floors in my time. From what I do know, an underlayment is usually a good idea as it provides you with a nice flat and even surface on which to apply the tiles and mastic and perhaps even a bit of a moisture barrier. But I would absolutely consult with a flooring specialist first. Sorry I couldn’t give you a very good answer.

Answering your comment just a few minutes after you post it doesn’t really help my case does it? lol. I do sleep. But fortunately I don’t need more than 6 hours to be a happy camper. Nicole on the other hand….whooo! That girl can sleep! :)
Actually, Nicole’s role in what I do goes in waves depending on how busy she is at work. But for the most part, its all me homie. The hardest times are when I am in the middle of a project. I like to spend a good 8-10 hours a day in the shop if I can, but I know I’m going to come back to an inbox just packed with emails. But a bad day doing this job is 1000x better than any good day I had in the lab! So I can’t complain.

Hey Marc,
Chuck Landry here from south Louisiana. I added you to my buddy list yesterday when I noticed you had a page here on Lumber Jocks. I have had your website bookmarked for quite some time now and have viewed nearly every video on it. I must say that as an amateur woodworker I totally admire your work and envy your talent and skill. Please, keep the podcast coming as I, and I am certain many others just like me will be waiting! And if you’re ever passing through Louisiana on I-10 give me a shout, I live in Breaux Bridge just east of Lafayette Louisiana on I-10. Breaux Bridge is the “Crawfish Capitol of the World”, known for its great “True” Cajun resturants and our two celebrities – Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme and the former Miss USA and now actress Ali Landry.

Hey Adam. Glad you like the shows buddy! The only advice I have for you at this point, and it might be obvious, is education. There are a number of great woodworking schools around the country where you can get a more formal education in design theory and construction. I definitely recommend going that route as you will want as many skills under your belt as possible. But here’s one bit of advice that might not be so obvious. No matter how good of a woodworker you are, you won’t go very far if you don’t understand how to run a business. So be sure to educate yourself in that area as well. Even just taking some continuing education courses will help a great deal. Running the business, dealing with customers, and marketing yourself are all vital ingredients to your success. So make sure you don’t forget that side of the equation.
Other than that, keep your eye on the prize and focus on that education.
Good luck Adam!
