« Part 4: The Table Tops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Part 5 of My First Real Attempt at a project. A shaker end Table series Part 6: Been A while but making progress. »

Well today I got the aprons cut and almost all of the drawer parts cut. I have to do the side and the bottom tomorrow then I can start designing the Dovetails. But as the title said, I learned a lot today, mainley about kick back on the table saw. I would have much rather not have learned it this way but life will go on. So I was cutting everything to width, and I have this phobia of spinning blades ever since I lost my finger tips on my jointer. But anyway, I was going through cutting everything and most of it was 3” or wider so I was like this is still a little closer to the blade than I want to be, so i used a push stick thinking it is better to be safe than sorry. Well I was sorry. I never thought about where I was putting the push stick and I was putting closer to the fence than the blade so when I neared the end of the cut BAM!!!! it happened. The peice of cherry came up off the table and hit the blade, the blade then kicked it back and hit me right in the stomach. Now I also later found out that I broke a piece of carbide off the blade and that was lodged in my thumb. So I was like ouch that really hurt. Next thing I know I was set back up trying to make another cut the same exact way, and it happened again. So from there on out anything less than 3” I use a push stick, wider than that I dont. So by days end which was about 2 hours I have my thumb with a cut and my stomach has a big old cut on it too. But I am glad that this happened because I learned that there is a thing called being to safe and it is the school of hard knocks. But any way there is not much to show picture wise just some aprons and a drawer front. Well tomorrow I plan on finishing cutting everything to size and then start on the dovetails. Will post some pics tomorrow of what it is going to look like.

My thumb thats been cleaned and numbed out with somthing.

There you go lew It hurt a lot but I think of it as more of a lesson than an injury.
