I have been making boxes for some time now. I was thinking today about my views of boxes and box making and thought I would share my opinion of the wooden box and maybe someone will take something away from this.
Boxes to me are the best examples of functional beauty.
A box is a square object used to hide away your valuables and jewelry. That being said I only put trays and compartments inside a box unless the customer specify. I do this because why limit the function of the box to just jewelry! Boxes can be used to hold anything that fits so why limit that opportunity?
The other important point to me in my box making is the use of a simple box design with interesting woods.
A box doesnt need to have all sorts of crazy embellishments to be beautiful. My boxes are square and plain but they explode with live and character once interesting woods are used. This is also a great for interestingly figured woods. Normally the HIGHLY figured exotics dont come in large quantity so what better application for those smaller pieces then on a wooden box!
Boxes can brighten someones day by the beauty then can posses and the valuables that are contained within!
They dont have to be a wild design with crazy joinery.

Like I said this is simply my opinion on boxes and box making.
I hope someone will take something away from this.

To me boxes are fun to make because they can be built with a fairly small amount of wood, they can be creatatively designed with only the imagination and talents of each individual, a single type of wood or a combination of several wood types can be combined tastefully…or not..depending on personal likes and dislikes.
Boxes can be built with scrap lumber left over from other projects. A box can be either simple or complex..time involved and the skill level of the person and their personal expression od ideas.

Boxes have always caught my eye here on LJ’s…they also seem to be popular for gifts. And like you said, the wood alone can bring out the interest in the design.

Good points, well made.

I also have some wierd, gut, feeling that when you own a box you own the space inside it.
