I was able to accomplish this turning because of the timely instruction and encouragement of my friend and neighbor, Jim Glynn. (Turners will know of his work because of its uniqueness and beauty. visit his site to view CARVED segmented turnings.)
This is my first large piece and contains maple, oak, and mahogany. Its 13 inches tall with a 11 1/2 ” diameter. 5 1/2 in base with 273 total pieces.
My first “successful” attempt making the chevron feature ring with the extremely precise joinery. fun, fun !
sanded with all grits between 60 and 600 , not fun, NOT FUN
Any suggestions y’all might give to shorten this drudgery would be appreciated.
3 coats of waterlox finish was very easy and looks great.
A christmas present for my lovely wife who supports my hobby I suspect because it keeps me occupied in the shop and out from underfoot each day. (:

This is made by laminating oak and walnut boards prior to cutting and shaping. the cooling rack is for baked goods and each of these projects are treated with food safe oil. the cutting board is also oak and walnut and involved alot of cut and pasting of smaller segments

thoroughly enjoy the time spent trying to imagine, then design, and produce these. The lathe skills required are a real challenge, as is the careful use of the table saw (watch your fingers). The math involved which determines the size, shape and angles of the segments is also challenging for a left-brained musician with little prior experience. Overall a great outlet for creative impulses for those who love woodworking.
Most of these works contain 100 + individual pieces requiring lots of glueups, shaping, and sanding-sanding-sanding. trying various finishes-tung oil, varnish, turners oils, food safe types, walnut and watco brand all seem ok -but choices are made depending on the types of wood and purpose of the piece.
for styling I like to use maple (or birch ) for lighter colors and contrast it with walnut, red oak, bubinga, or paduak accents.
The attraction of the artform for me is threefold: 1. Unlimited design options; 2. physical and mental dexterity required and,3. hours of fun in a workshop uninterrupted by outside BS
