I’m currently working out of a friend’s garage while I build my first home. I have a mini Dremmel lathe (max diameter ~2.5 inches), a mini wood lathe (max diameter 8 inches), a scroll saw that unfortunately has pin ended blades, though I’m looking to buy an update for it, a plunge router and table, a couple Dremmels, a Dremmel press, and an assortment of hand tools.

My guy friend who’s garage I’m borrowing has several shop vacs, a floor stand drill press, a table saw, a miter saw, a floor stand blet/disc sander combo, an off brand Dremmel with mini router table/Dremmel press combo unit, and a bench top strip/disc sander combo.

I’m a little worried about what happens when I move into my new place. I’m going to NEED the miter saw and drill press immediately, with the rest of the tools of guy friend’s not far behind. This is going to get expensive fast.

Swamps, how about posting some pictures of your shop set-up when you get a chance? Tours of other shops are always an interesting post to see.

Well I sure do hope that it all goes well for you. Welcome to Lumberjocks.

I’ll see if I can get some this week of the work space guy pal and I have set up in his garage. He’s a good friend and has taken pity on me and my lack of a garage. He also likes using my router table and scroll saw :) It’s a very temporary set up, and cramped by guy pal’s family’s inability to throw anything out…and my wood scraps piles. In short, it’s a disaster.

I had a VERY modest set up in my first garage of my own in a rented duplex years ago (Dremels and various half built doll houses), but then was disabled in 2 hit-and-run accidents. I lost the place 3 years into the disability which is pretty impressive money management for someone in their 20s and unemployed who will never qualify for disability because she was a student at the date of injury.

Now, 5 years after that first accident, though I’m still too physically limited for a full time job, I’ve managed to buy my first piece of property for cash and my mom is helping me (carrying the loan since medical bills destroyed my credit) build my first home this summer. I’m thrilled. I’m more than sick of living in her cramped basement with no kitchen for cooking or my yarn dyeing business. Driving across town every time I need to do anything in a garage isn’t great either.

My new garage will be what’s worth photographing. It’s a two car garage, which I will use for parking one car in. It’s very snowy out in that part of the country and I’m not strong enough to scrape ice off my own car. I do plan on putting locking casters on several workbenches though so I can pull out my car and spread out the tools to a less cramped arrangement for working. My garage already exists out on my 8/10ths of an acre. I’ll see if I can find the before pictures of my new garage/shop. My summer project is to build a 3 bedroom/2.5 bathroom dovetailed log cabin next to the garage. I’ll also be stabilizing the existing storage loft in the new shop to store my wood piles, tearing out and rebuilding some of the existing garage storage and workbenches, and putting up drywall, white board, and peg board in the space as well.

The idea that I’m custom designing my first home and wood shop before I’m 30 just blows my mind. It really was a piece of luck finding that foreclosed agricultural property out in the country for so darn cheap!
