RETRO 50s DESIGNED STORE SIGN

I was asked to build a sign to cover a bricked up window at the front of a store. The building was built in the 50s, so I did a little research and layed out a design. The first picture is just concept that the customer approved. Then the border is painted on. The final product (without final finish) is the third picture. The final picture will be uploaded when the finish is dry and the sign is hung. It’s not much of a woodworking project. The wood is two sheets of furniture grade 3/4 inch plywood cut down and layed together. It will be hung with french cleats. The woodworking took all of about 45 minutes. I have been painting for a week. The sign measure 72”(w) X 88’ (h). Thanks for looking.

RECLAIMED PINE COFFEE TABLE WITH MYSTERY WOOD

Well, I found some old 2X10 pine boards and one mystery board that was all eat up with something and was spalted. I planed it all down to the size I wanted them. The pine was rock hard. I went through two sets of blades on the planer. I ended up with a coffee table.

Picture 1: The doors on it, hardware installed, and finish applied (satin poly).

Picture 2: The mystery wood.

Picture 3: I stained it with coffee and tea that I boiled down to give it a more aged look.

Picture 4: The top on the body, I used the most weathered boards for this. They are all cracked, busted, split, and full of holes. This is my favorite part of the whole table.

Picture 5: The frame and sides. The door frame is the mystery wood. It is not pine. It is spalted and eaten up by some kind of bug. Maybe termites, maybe worms, but they evacuated a long time ago.

Picture 6: The lumber.

My wife has been hounding me for a little over a year to make her this because our puppy ate the corners and legs off of our old coffee table. She wanted something to keep the throw blankets in that usually stay scattered about the couches. When I found the lumber, I already knew what it was going to become. It’s nothing special, but it’s has taught me a lot.

Going Away Plaque, FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY

Our CO is leaving soon. The First Classes brought me an old plaque and some parts ( almost no money spent) for his going away gift. The Plaque reads, “Thoughtfully removed by the Acey-Deucey Association, so it wouldn’t hit ya where the good Lord split ya! Fair Winds and Following Seas” CO NTTC MERIDIAN, MS

The only way, I guess, for some to speak their minds is when there is plausible deniability. This can be chaulked up to being a gag gift, but I think these are there true feelings. Just sayin’.

It is a picture taken with my phone so the quality is lacking, but one gets the point. So will he, I suppose.

What do you think would look good on this project. It is 10” X 11”. Red Oak and Purple Heart. I want something to compliment the project and not look like they were just thrown on. This is for a Christmas present for my best friend’s wife. I want it to look great, not just good enough.

Please excuse the finish, I am not quite finished yet. Also, I live in Meridian, MS. It is a podunk town with no place to buy much. If you have an idea for hinges, please post a link for them as well. Thank you all very much. I will repost pictures as soon as I am done.

End / Reading Table as a going away gift for a transferring Chief.

She is using it as a reading/end table. I drew at circle in the middle of the table top with a gold flake paint pen and took it to work to have everyone that worked for her and with her sign it with a silver flake paint pen. Then I sealed the top and put it all together.

The coin in the middle of the table front is our command coin. I asked the CO if he was willing to give up one of his coins for her. Of course the answer was “no”. So I gave her mine that was given to me during an award ceremony. I share this little story in the hope that I can teach folks not to be a jerk, just to be a jerk.

The wood in this table is red oak and spanish cedar. Unfortunately, red oak and pine is pretty much the only thing I can find in Meridian, MS. I had to hunt down the cedar. It took me two weeks to find a local woodworker that had some he was willing to let go of.
