Walnut Slabs - Wood glooooooaaat

I was over at my dad’s house this morning doing some tile work when I got a notification on my phone from the “lumber” notification I have set up on Craigslist. Someone in my dad’s town was looking to get rid of some walnut slabs—he hadn’t measured them nor knew how much they went for. I decided to stop by and take a look:

Turns out they were both about 14/4 rough sawn walnut, 13-14” wide, and one was 4’ long- the other 5’.

The kicker: $40.

I’m thinking of making something small/nice for the guy and dropping it off at his house some time. He inherited a lot of walnut and hemlock from his dad’s estate after his dad passed away last year. In other news, he said he would keep me informed if anything else popped up.

Thanks for the look. Any ideas what to make this guy?

Lots of possibilities. A garden bench with one of them? Nice find If I lived in a place that might have wood for sale, I could try to have my phone do that. Nah! I would have to have a young person with me to figure out how to answer it!!
Have fun with the wood.

FYI I have an Android phone and the app is called CraigsNotifica. You enter a search term (“lumber”), pick what regions you want it to check (most of W.NY) and wait for it to tell you when something new has been posted.

As for a garden bench, I have probably a 1000 ft of barn board I can do that with..

I’m thinking I might have to get the Android now.

Its definitely worth it. I may be a young whippersnapper, but probably 1% of my ‘apps’ are games and the rest are real-world productivity/communication/$$/etc boosters.

I’ll be right over with my truck to get them. Great find there.

Great find, it’s nice of you to think of making the guy something. Another thing is a small end table or if you have a lathe, make him a nice bowl.

BT Sorry about that. I might have a few to spare

Mike I don’t have a lathe.. working to resolve that, however. First step will be getting my neighbor to mill it to 5/4

Great find! Sometimes you just get lucky. I recently responded to a Craigslist ad for a planer and went to the home and bought it. While there I noticed a rack of hardwood and started negotiating for that as well. Ended up buying over 500 bft of mostly cherry and maple for less than a quarter per bft. I don’t think I’ll need lumber for awhile now.
