Sorry guys, I am new to all this stuff. I will try to do better on my posts.
W

hat i am building is a laptop rest for my wife’s new net-book. She comes home pulls it out of her bag and sets it on her legs in the bed. So i am building a box with a removable top, dowels in the bottom to tie a pillow to and a mouse pad rest that swivels.
I am trying to keep it all traditional looking. (ole stile joinery for technology) All the joinery was done by hand. I am using amber shellac on red oak.

thanks Lew i started with pine and popular, this is the first hardwood i have tried. I like it. My saw is a marples from home depot and my chisels i paid 6 bucks a set of four. I just keep an edge on em and they do fine.

this box looks NOTHING like “new to woodworking”!

it looks fantastic! the joinery is spot on.

quick time – if you haven’t glued this yet – you may want to chamfer all the edges since it’s going to be handled constantly, and this will make it less sharp and more inviting to the touch.

Thanks PurpLev. And all you guys. Its been glued. I have a little (palm) plane and its great on easing the edges. I am trying to stay away from my router table.
