Haven’t been keeping up with this blog as much as I wanted to, but that’s the price of the holiday season I guess. I got really lucky on the weekend. We had the big year end damaged goods sale at my work and I managed to score all kinds of hardware for about $20. I got boxes of wood screws, brad nails, tapcons, drywall plugs, some masonry bits, misc small drill bits, 10” blades for my radial arm saw, and some sandpaper for the random orbit sander that I also picked up. All in all it’s about $200 worth of stuff in a really big box and they only charged me $20 for it. I was pretty happy.

I’ve been working on some christmas presents lately. I made a coin bank for my wife. It’s almost done. I used 3/4” ply that I stained with red chestnut. I learned a lot while making it. My miter saw really sucks so when I cut the 45s for the corners of the box there were some issues with gaps, but I learned how to use stainable wood filler. I also used my router table to round over the edges of everything. I’ve only used the router once before, so that was interesting. I also used stain for the first time. All in all it’s been a pretty fun project. I used 1/4” dowel to lock the lid on and I’m in the process of cutting a key to be used to push the dowels through the holes to open the box up. It’s a pretty cool little design idea that I had and it actually worked out fairly well. I drilled 3 holes into each side of the box and ran the dowel through from one side to the other. Then notched two of the holes on one side of the box and one on the other side, so when you push the dowel in you can lift the top off, but otherwise the top is secure. I’m sure that’ll make more sense when I finally get a photo of it up.

I’ve tried my hand at a few christmas tree ornaments, but they didn’t work out too well, so I have come up with another idea and will try again. I also have some puzzles to cut and a car to finish off. All in all it’s still a busy time in my workshop and christmas is almost here. Oh well. Hope everyone is having fun and I wish you all the best through the holiday season. Merry Christmas!

Sounds like a great score. Keep the sawdust flying
