36 posts in 2217 days Location: Irvine, California I am beginning as a studio furnituremaker and designer in Orange County, CA. My interest in making furniture was first sparked while studying fine art at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My intense interest in Chinese and Japanese art, which is not distinguished from craft, provided a basis to explore my interest in woodworking through the lens of an artist and a scholar. Although I was often frustrated at the University by what I felt was the closed-mindedness of the academic art world, the chance to study the the theoretical and historical origins of art in tandem with my development as a craftsman, left me with a broad aesthetic knowledge to draw from. After graduating from college I adjusted my studio to suit the needs of a more artisan style of furniture, and completed several pieces that reflect my ecclectic approach to design. Really nice projects skillfully executed. Pleasure seeing your work. The display cabinet was cool. I liked the drawer pulls. They are all great.

I went back and looked through your projects. I like your style, we share interest in some of the same influences.
I find your personal story and experience with the academic art world interesting. Especially for the frustrations experienced, yet you managed to maintain clarity of finding the value and importance of what you were learning.
It sounds a bit like the academic world was trying to get you to think one way but you chose to think your way…isn’t that the purpose of higher education? To broaden the mind?
