All I can tell you is I married well. My shop for the last 7 years in this house has been in a 12×20 basement room. Whenever I work dust fills the house the smell of finish makes my wife nauseous. Last year she came to me with the idea of building a shop for me. I called in every favor I have been saving and got a 42×22 shop built onto the back of the garage with the help of a bunch of friends.

....Best friends a guy could have, helping me frame….

I have gotten to the end of the sheetrock stage and will begin trimming it this weekend.

I got some real valuable ideas from working in a small shop for so long. When I built the new shop I included a 10×8 finishing room with 3 banks of 3 bulb florescent lighting fixtures. This room will be sealed so I can keep cutting in the shop while I have parts drying with no fear of contamination. I also included a soundproofed 4×5 closet so the air compressor and dust collector can be used without so much noise in the shop.

I am making it pretty fancy for a shop but I want it to be a place that inspires me to design better pieces.

More to come as I get ready to trim and finish.
.

Stevie, your shop is looking pretty good. I am sure you are excited about it and ready to get started on the fun stuff- making shop cabinets, etc. I am looking forward to see more progress pictures.

Thanks Guys,

Martin the Design in the floor is for a game we play here in the midwest called washers, its more of an excuse to have a cold beer than anything else. One of my close friends owns a concrete company so the night before we poured we decided to pour a washer court into the floor and my friend acid stained it! The holes will be covered with a blank when in shop mode and when friends are over, boards like these (only with holes cut in them!) will be inserted.

Overkill for sure, but un none the less.

Sweet deal! That’s going to be a huge shop. I look forward to seeing its completion. Congrats!

So exited – I have had so many interruptions in building my shop over the last year and come hell or high water I was going to finish it this weekend. however last night I got a call from the Army that my stepson is coming back from Afghanistan. So we are heading out to see him in instead. This is one interruption I don’t mind at all!

Stevie, it looks like you are really building a wonderful shop. It sounds like you have a wonderful wife. I have a wonderful wife myself. Your wife and your family make it all worthwhile. I hope you have a lot of fun fixing up that new shop. It’s gonna look great. Thanks, buddy. :)

Got the shop stained yesterday. Used a Sherman Williams wipe on Chestnut stain, got two gallons of mis-tint for $15. Friend of mine brought over an air assist pump and we got it done fairly fast. go all the stain on and the sanding sealer sprayed. Sanded it today and should be shooting the finish tomorrow.

Trim up.

Stevie, your shop is beginning to look pretty good. The wainscoting really dresses up the shop.
