I got a delta shopmaster ss-350 scroll saw that has quickset II chucks. It was new in box when I got it second hand for $50 with a stand and already one of the chucks has failed (the cam doesn’t stay flipped with the blade in it no matter ow much I mess with the screw). I was able to find a complete replacement (delta 40-251) for $20 on eB...

Partial routing desk leg? - 10 replies
I’m making a desk for my daughter. The legs are 1 1/2” squares. The drawers and side panels come down to within 5” of the ground. I want to round over the outside edge of the legs, but leave the last 5” square (think of a lot of balustrades I’ve seen that have rounded/fluted middles but square ends). Any sugg...

newbie with box joints - 8 replies
I’m looking to start making some small boxes with box joints. Is there a consensus on whether most people use table saw and jig or router and jig? Easiest to get started on? Thanks

I am going to buy saws for dovetails and mortise/tenon joinery. I am looking at the Veritas molded-spine dovetail 14 tpi saw (http://www.leevalley.com/US/Wood/page.aspx?p=64007&cat=1,42884,68511&ap=1) and am wondering what people use to cut tenons by hand? I was also handed the back saw below…can anyone tell me what it is? The...

Getting into dovetailing and mortise and tenon joinery with hand tools. I got an awesome 1/2” and 3/8” mortising chisel and mallet for Christmas. With some Christmas money I’m going to pick up the Veritas molded spine dovetail and cross cut saws:http://www.leevalley.com/en/Wood/page.aspx?p=64007&cat=1,42884,68511&ap...

5/4 x 6 or 8 white cedar? - 8 replies
This wife wants to make some raised beds (probably two 3×5) in the back yard. Looking at some catalogues…premade kits are pricey and they look pretty simple. Catch is, I need 5/4 cedar boards. I’m in the Baltimore, MD area. Our big boxes don’t carry it and I’ve called a couple lumber yards and they don’t ...

Going Rate for Vintage Stanley 750s? - 3 replies
Anybody know what the a reasonable price per chisel would be, assuming they are in good shape? I’m on the hunt for a good starter set of used chisels. Can’t find the marples with sheffield steel I wanted…so now I’m on to 750s, but I don’t have any idea what a reasonable price to pay is.

From the way I understand it, Marples blue handle chisels made in Sheffield are a good starter chisel. Then Irwin bought Marples and kept making them in Sheffield for a while and those are good too. Then Irwin started making them in China and those are not so good. I’m trying to get a set of 4, new, Marples from Sheffield with blue ha...

pressure txt 5/4 x 4? - 3 replies
So we bought a used playset that has some rot. The existing boards are pressure treated 5/4×4. I went to the big box stores in our area…the all carry pressure treated 5/4×6, but no 5/4×4. Now, I can buy the 6 in wide boards and cut them down to 4 in wide ones (and route the cut edges to round them)....but that adds quit...

messed up my tablesaw - HELP - 4 replies
I bought a used Craftsman tablesaw a couple years ago, it was finely tuned with an aftermarket fence and a forrest woodworker 2 blade. It beautifully. Last weekend, working on a project, I forgot the saw blade was up about three inches and gave the fence a hard shove to get it out of the way from the other side. When it didn’t move, I...

Barrage of questions from me…but we’re slow at work this week. I’ve been collecting equipment for sharpening with the scarry method. I want to have all my ducks in a row before I try my hand. I have a granite tile (12×12), a veritas mark II, sandpaper through 600 grit (still need to find some 1000, and 2000 grit), and...

Had my first taste of galootism. I was searching for some used hand planes in my area…and hit on a craigslist post of a guy with 350 hand planes in his basement he’s looking to unload. I ended up in his basement this Saturday and did some picking. When I showed up with my steel wool and metal straight edge, he asked if I’d a...

cutting lap joints in 2X4s...a lot of them - 7 replies
I’ve finally gotten around to putting up an easy lumber rack (as opposed to my overloaded saw horses). I’m attaching three 2X4s stretching from the joists in my basement to the floor and spaced out to handle 8 foot lumber. I’m attaching to those three levels of “shelve” pieces (perpendicular 14” 2×4 pie...

rust prevention... - 12 replies
I think I’m starting to have more than a collection of shop tools and the beginning of an investment in a woodshop set up. I will post pics at some point, but basically, I have half of a rowhome basement (thank God for low ceilings, otherwise we might club it out and I’d lose my shop). My question is, what should i do about rust?...

tools for hand cut dovetails? - 16 replies
So my 3 and 1/2 year old likes tinkering in the shop and watching Handy Many…and suggested I build him a tool box. I’m plan on making a small version of a carpenter’s tool box. And…I’d like to try my hand at hand cutting dovetails to join it. What do I need for tools? I have a bevel gauge and a marking gauge. ...

Help identify a block plane? - 5 replies
Hey all,I was given this block plane last night by a neighbor that’s moving overseas and was cleaning out his workshop. I believe it’s a stanley…but I could be wrong. I’ve done a fair bit of googling and come up empty. Any help? http://i.imgur.com/Jc2Qk.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Tyr0u.jpg

Fixing a splitting workbench? - 4 replies
Okay, so I’ve been a bit post-happy this AM, last one… I was given the fantastic opportunity to purchase at a great price this Ulmia workbench (when a friend of a cabinet maker went to the great workshop in the sky and he wanted to get his equipment to someone who would use it). I have it in a basement workshop that is crying for...

any ideas what this bench vice might be worth? - 5 replies
I was handed this bench vice a while ago by a neighbor when I was planning on building my own bench. Then I was given an opportunity to get an Ulmia, so I don’t need it any more. I tried to return it, but the neighbor doesn’t want it back. I was thinking of selling it, because there are still a bunch of tools on my “needR...

Clamps: a recommended starter set? - 12 replies
It’s slow at work, so I’m firing up questions. I know folks are going to say “well, it depends on what you’re doing” and I get that, but what would folks recommend in terms of a starter set of clamps? At the moment, I have:2 HF heavy pipe clamps with 5 foot pipes2 24 inch bar clamps (no idea who made them)2 36 i...
