$0.25 hollow plastic handle bevel gauge. Looking to pimp it up w/ a new handle! - 9 replies

I picked up a bevel gauge at a flea market awhile back that has a hollow plastic handle. I’ve been thinking about making a new handle for it. Any ideas from you fine people? Ivory inlays, brass rabbit inlays, wing nut carved from an oyster shell…?

Any machinists out there ever made their own hand plane parts? - 19 replies

Is it worth the time and effort to set up the tooling and to buy tapes and dies to make brass adjustment knobs, knob and tote bolts and nuts, frog bolts, so on & so on? After Becca’s schooling is done we’ll be moving back to Wisconsin where my dad has a metal lathe that almost never gets used.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-Lumber/ You could dilute 1 part shellack with 2 parts thinner and spray the boards with it using a Huddson weed sprayer. When the shellack drys it leave an air tight coat snuffing out the bugs.

I’ve been wanting to find a chart of lumber hardness and price ratio. Is Poplar harder than pine? How much more expensive is it than pine? How about Willow or Ash?

I acquired a bunch of one and a half inch crate banding and cut them into 6, 7, 8 inch pieces. Clamp till / storage rack, I'm looking for ideas. - 48 replies

I thought about cutting an old wooden latter in half and screwing them together side by side and mounting it to the wall so I can hang clamps on the rungs.
