I picked up a bevel gauge at a flea market awhile back that has a hollow plastic handle. I’ve been thinking about making a new handle for it. Any ideas from you fine people? Ivory inlays, brass rabbit inlays, wing nut carved from an oyster shell…?

Is it worth the time and effort to set up the tooling and to buy tapes and dies to make brass adjustment knobs, knob and tote bolts and nuts, frog bolts, so on & so on? After Becca’s schooling is done we’ll be moving back to Wisconsin where my dad has a metal lathe that almost never gets used.

THE GREAT TOTE GRAIN RUN CONTROVERSY - 9 replies
I’ve noticed that most, if not all, totes feature grain that runs parallel to the sole of the plane which is perpendicular to the length of the tote. For maximum strength, should the grain not run with the length (height) of the handle? Or is it a moot point because the bolt that runs through the tote provides all the strength necessary,...

I acquired a bunch of one and a half inch crate banding and cut them into 6, 7, 8 inch pieces. Now that I know how to peen a brass rivet in a wood handle I thought I could make some cool putty knives with black walnut grips with oak and turquoise inlays. The banding is not hardened, it will kink when you bend it unlike a putty knife. A putty ...
