bandsaw #2: working on wheels

I’m still working on the wheels.
Now they’re round and crowned.
Also I’ve formed the drive pulley.
I tore apart two old treadmills, and used one as a temporary motor to spin the wheel while shaping it. I have what will probably be the final motor on the bandsaw, but I used the treadmill motor for its variable speed. I kept it fairly slow since I have zero wood turning experience.
It took awhile to get the wheels round, but I think they turned out alright.
Next steps are to put some finish on the wheels, attempt to balance them, then apply the bicycle innertube tires.

bandsaw #1: slow progress

I’m slowly making a Woodgears.ca bandsaw. Between a new job and a baby I’m not making very quick progress though.
I hopefully will be done in a year.
So far I have the frame roughly built, both wheel mounts are roughed-out, the wheels are rough cut, and the wheels have one bearing flange glued on.
For the frame I used a combination of cheap pine from Lowe’s sandwiched with some oddly colored maple.. I assume it’s spalted. It was all the wood shop had at the time. I didn’t want to use just pine, so I sandwiched it with the maple to save a little money.
Next steps are glue on the other bearing flanges, making sure there’s no wobble in the wheels. I anticipate that step taking some time.

getting close… finished the drawer fronts, so I’m nearly done with all cutting. Mostly left is sanding and the part I dread the most – finishing. That’ll be the make it or break it time.
