I became interested in segmented turning because of the flexibility in design it provides. There are a lot of ways of approaching the design, from guesstimating, laying it out full size on paper, building your own spreadsheet to auto calculate segment sizes etc., using some online calculators, or software. A few weeks ago a co-worker and I were talking about axes and he sent me a video on YouTube called An Axe to Grind, its a documentary by the Adirondack Woodsman all about axes – care, maintenance, hanging, etc. It’s an hour long and I watched about half of it the first time, its very informative and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basics about axes. Both lie-Nielsen(picture 1&2) and Lee Valley(picture 3) sell auriou’s rasps. I bought one from each company just to see what the difference is between the handles those companies provide with the rasps. While both handles are comfortable, the maple handle from Lie-Nielsen is a joy to hold. After Reading MBS’ review I ordered the same blade. It arrived today while I was at work. Very well packaged and in good shape. After dinner, I went out to the shop and installed on my newer Craftsman 12” 89 1/2” blade (Similar to the Rikon). It is a great saw. After about 15 minutes of setup it was ready to go.
