OB shine juice - 3 replies
Morning all. I’ve just finished a dyed maple vase (pics to come). I finished it with Capt’n Eddies OB shine juice and it has turned out great. On his video the Caption recommends adding a top coat i.e. varnish, poly etc. The darned vase is supper smooth right now and if I use a WOP I’m sure it will attract the dust. IR...

table saw problem - 6 replies
Morning all. I have a General Int. 10” cabinet saw model # 200 MR. It has developed an issue when I try to lower the blade. The blade will drop maybe an inch (but it is quite jerky as it goes down). After the first inch it gets harder to lower, till it finally jams and stops. Raising the blade just a tad will allow me to drop it furth...

Anilline dye from L/V - 4 replies
I’m going to try my hand at dying a vessel I turned using the stuff from L/V. Not real happy with the piece so this will be my experimental tryout. After I raise the grain with a water spray and sand I will apply the dye (I plan on using several colours). The big question is how to seal with the 1st coat to prevent washing a way a porti...

It does have the plastic reducing bushings but that was never an issue before. lots of meat left on the wheel so I don’t want to chuck it. Any t...

Steady rest question. - 8 replies
I hope this isn’t too dumb a question. I will be making a steady rest in the very near future. After looking at all the many pics and articles, I’m kinda confused. I have decided to make the round, 3 wheel version. If my lathe has a 12” swing, do I make the outside ring 12” or does it really matter? Thanks.

Fixing a crack(s) - 11 replies
Afternoon all. I was turning a vessel this afternoon and was darn near done, so just to break the monotony I had to catch an edge. So now I have 2 large and long cracks in the vessel. It has excellent grain and swirls so I want to save it. The plan is to accent the cracks with copper fillings. Should I: a) Mix up a batch (for each crack) o...

Morning all. I have turned a mid sized hollow vessel. 4”x5”tall. Sanded to 600 grit and 2 coats of DIY wipe on poly and a rub down with 0000 steel wool. I thought it was pretty smooth when I finished, but now I can feel the occasional little dust speck?? I still have a mortice on the bottom so I can chuck it up. At this time I ...

I see several people use black leather dye to stain finials. Why not just black paint? If you seal the finial first wouldn’t that do the same thing?

Morning all. I have a 12” General Maxi lathe. I’m looking for a set of plans for a steady rest. I googled the question and got just a whack of hits, but I kinda like the one Alan Stratton made (as wood turns) but he hasn’t responded to my email. I’m trying my hand at designing my own, but if I had a drawing things m...
