Afternoon all….if it is where you are.I’m turning a Cherry Vessel that has 2 voids near the top, one quite a good size. to make matters worse there is a bit of punky wood on the edge of each void. Steady rest question. - 8 replies
I hope this isn’t too dumb a question. I will be making a steady rest in the very near future. After looking at all the many pics and articles, I’m kinda confused. I have decided to make the round, 3 wheel version. If my lathe has a 12” swing, do I make the outside ring 12” or does it really matter? Thanks.

Fixing a crack(s) - 11 replies
Afternoon all. I was turning a vessel this afternoon and was darn near done, so just to break the monotony I had to catch an edge. So now I have 2 large and long cracks in the vessel. It has excellent grain and swirls so I want to save it. The plan is to accent the cracks with copper fillings. Should I: a) Mix up a batch (for each crack) o...

Buffing - 7 replies
Morning all. I have turned a mid sized hollow vessel. 4”x5”tall. Sanded to 600 grit and 2 coats of DIY wipe on poly and a rub down with 0000 steel wool. I thought it was pretty smooth when I finished, but now I can feel the occasional little dust speck?? I still have a mortice on the bottom so I can chuck it up. At this time I ...

Dye question. - 5 replies
I see several people use black leather dye to stain finials. Why not just black paint? If you seal the finial first wouldn’t that do the same thing?

Steady rest - 11 replies
Morning all. I have a 12” General Maxi lathe. I’m looking for a set of plans for a steady rest. I googled the question and got just a whack of hits, but I kinda like the one Alan Stratton made (as wood turns) but he hasn’t responded to my email. I’m trying my hand at designing my own, but if I had a drawing things m...

I’m looking on the web for a set of Greene & Greene night table plans. Just about every image I click on takes me to Ted McGrath’s wood working plans. Any one know the skinny on this guy? I’ve hear to be kinda leery of his site. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Lighting control - 3 replies
I was in a furniture store to day looking at a hutch/ buffet on the floor. It had 1 puc lite in the centre of the top. To turn the lite on and off all you did was touch the upper left cabinet hinge. Some kind of micro switch obviously, but I can’t find any info on it. The sales guy was no help at all. Any thoughts would be great…...

Bowl gouge - 6 replies
For Fathers Day I received a Sheffield Layland 1/2” bowl gouge. I thought it looked kinda big so I matched it up to my nearly depleted ,el cheapo 1/2 gouge (that I bought as a set) and ya it’s a fair bit bigger. It has 1/2” stamped on the shaft, but the micrometer says 5/8. So the question is. When did 5/8 become 1/2 ? No...

Morning all. Happy Birthday to all the LJ’s north of the 49th. While finishing off the bottom of the hutch portion of the Hutch/ Buffet build. I forgot to elongate the holes for the pegs. I added a bit of glue to the centre of the tenon on each end. Installed the cap, clamped it, drilled it, added a drop of glue to the end of each p...

I have some well seasoned Cherryblanks. I have turned 1 bowl with it and ii has several small cracks, I would like to try my hand at filling these cracks.
