Planing question. - 7 replies
Afternoon all. I need to re-saw some 3/4×6 walnut into 3/8” wide strips ( 3/8×6” ). I will have to run them through my thickness planer to clean up the re-saw and to trim them down to 1/4”. As they say not to try any thing that thin in the planer I guess I need to use a sled. The question is how do I hold the wal...

Spray gun - 12 replies
Morning all. I’m thinking of using a spray gun with my 4 gal compressor but I’m not sure which way to go. The self contained units (Earlex 5000) are kinda out as I’m very cost conscience (cheap). I would be spraying water born varathane for the most part as I getting tiered of the damned brush stokes on my finish. I”m...

Mortising jig - 4 replies
Afternoon all. I going to try my hand at making a set of Kevin Rodel’s A&C chairs. I have the plans in my hot little hands and have been reading the info and blogs from Grampa_doodie and kbiniowa. I’m looking at mortising jig plans. If all else fails I may have to look at getting a dedicated mortising machine, but I would pre...

casing - 4 replies
Puttin’ up some door casing. the floor is carpet, but in 6/8 months were gonna change it to hard wood. Made my measurements, cut them both ( mistake #1), didn’t add a fudge factor (mistake #2). Now 1 is at least 1/4” short, the other almost 1/2”. If it wasn’t for the flooring change I might have got away with it....

google sketchup quest. - 0 replies
Morning all. When you open Sketchup and you click on file, A drop down menu appears with all your past drawings at the bottom (so you can select a drawing to work on). How do you get rid of or limit the number of drawings that will show in the drop down menu? Thanks Mark.

Bench top quest. - 6 replies
Morning all. I’m going to make a bench for my lathe using 2×4 cut down to 44”. I would like to laminate the 2×4 the flat (glued and screwed) after I square up the edges. Should I be concerned about wood movement? I built my work bench with 2×4 but I built it with the 2×4 on edge. Thanks for your help.

Mortising quest. - 4 replies
Morning all. I’m making a couple of foot stools Mission style. I usually use false tenons on the front of the legs to give the piece a through tenon look. This time I’m trying real through tenons. I have the leg set up on a drill press with a 3/8 brad point bit. I put a piece of scrap under the leg to prevent tear out from the b...

Slot cutting jig - 2 replies
A while ago I was searching through the site looking for info on making Mission (Craftsman) style dining chairs. Among many others there was one fellow that used a Rockler slot cutting jig to cut all the mortises. He went on to mention he was able to cut mortises at a constant angle as well. I would like to look in to one of these but I can...

Thickness planer quest. - 7 replies
I picked up a Dewalt 735 on sale at one of the local tool stores. For $550 I couldn’t refuse. I built a table taking ideas from the site. My thanks to all who went before me. Right now I’ve got it hooked up to a 2 1/2” hose to a Thien cyclone to a shop vac. It ain’t happenin’.If I cut a 4” hole in top of...

Chisel quest - 5 replies
Afternoon all. What do you folks think of Maxwood Turning tools. I recently picked up a New 6 pcs for $80. The edges definably want attention, but I’m kinda concerned if they’re worth having. As I’m a 100% noob to the world of wood turning i thought they’d at least get me going. I know ya can’t expect much for ...

Speed question - 3 replies
I’ve taken an interest in wood turning and in reading various posts/ Youtube videos I’m thinking of taking the plunge. Nothing cast in stone yet, but I was looking at the Grizzly GO462. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to have all the bells and whistles from a beginners point of view. The question is. Is 600 RPM to fa...

Kudos to Stumpy Nubbs - 1 reply
I started another end table on Wed. I glued up the top with 7-25×3.5” Cherry. Yesterday it came outa the clamps for planing. I used the #4 to knock down the seams. The #7 iron has a bit of a camber to it and the 6 is straight and sq. ( I got the 6 first and squared the blade) so I’ll have to swap the 2. All three worked lik...

Diy hand plane - 6 replies
As per Don’s request I’ve added a couple of pics of my latest creation. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have made the blade opening so big, but that’s what the plan called for.It does work, but the shavings are fairly thick and it plugs up a lot. Any thoughts on a fix or should I drop it in my smoker?

diy hand plane - 4 replies
I built a diy smoother plane using the Popular Mechanics plans and an Iron I picked up at the swap meet. All in all it was an interesting and fun project. The thought of making my own plane is very appealing. I realize the iron is just a tad long, but I don’t think the wood will know. I hand cut the groove for the cap iron screw, but ...

minwax - 9 replies
I’m in finishing mode on a Cherry coffee table. I’ve got 2 coats of Minwax Teak oil on the top. As it’s a coffee table I want to finish it with several coats of Minwax wipe on poly. Whatcha think? I know products like Minwax ain’t the best (and there ain’t no Teak oil in it) but I like the results. Thanks. Mark
