drawer question - 3 replies
My daughter asked me to make a table like this for her. I’m kinda bumfuzzled about drawer slides. The drawers are recessed back from the front of the table, so I’m thinkin’ just a hard wood runner underneath with a runner on each side to keep the drawer straight. I see a lot of the L/J’s favor wood slides, but I’m...

Table top hardware question - 0 replies
Morning all. Re-guarding table leaf locks. I know it’s standard practice to put the leaf locks inboard of the skirt, out of sight as it were. Is it a bad / stupid idea to put them on the other side of the skirt? I don’t think they would be all that exposed. I have 3” from the table edge to the skirt. I see Rockler ha...

Oak bowls - 4 replies
I had a good score Thurs. My neighbor was cleaning out his place and came across a full 2”x9.5×96” oak plank his boy was gonna use in high school. He asked if i wanted it, so I said hell ya. Yesterday I cut off a 2-10” pcs and went to it. Darned hard stuff. The one on the left I wiped down with”Teak Oil”...

table top question. - 2 replies
Afternoon all. I’m getting ready to mount the top to the frame of the table I’m making. I’m using table extensions as I want to add several leaves, but I’m kinda bumfuzzeled as to what I should do next.I have found where i want the extensions on the under side of the top. I have found center by center on the fra...

table top quest. - 4 replies
Evening all. I’m part way through my table build and am gearing up to make the top. Is there any hard and fast rules about how wide each board should be. I was going to go with 6.5” wide boards. But when I bought my material a lot of it is 8”. With machining , cut it down to 7.5. Any problems with the boards that wide? T...

I think I have a dust collection issue. - 7 replies
Lack of room and CASH kinda go hand in hand. If I was planning all the time I might become a bit bitter. The results of 50 bf of 6/4×8 x 10’Cherry and 11 bf of 6/4×8 Walnut, planned to 1-3/36 Damned garbage can was full as well. This where the garbage can was. I kinda like the layered effect. :)

Dining table - 4 replies
morning all. I’m starting a table build and have a question about the top. The top will be 5/4 Cherry. I plan to use equalizer extensions to enlarge the table when needed. After a bit of research I have noticed if the table is expandable the grain runs width ways. I gather this done to provide a tighter fit when the table is closed. ...

Steel shop - 9 replies
Morniing all. I’m kinda sorta thinking of building a proper shop in the back yard, so I can get outta the damned garage. After doing a quick check with the local authorities I find the start up costs (drawings and permits are gonna be a bugger. Then I started thinking about the steel pre fab sheds/shops. Mine would be about 16’ X...

Band saw quest. - 1 reply
I’ve watched several Youtube vids on sharpening a band saw blade with a Dremel and a small round grinding attachment. Like their chain saw sharpening stone. Does this sound like a reasonably good idea? I kinda think you might take off to much of the set…such as there is. I have a 1/2” 3T/I blade. It’s a good quality bl...

Table question - 1 reply
Afternoon all. When building a table top, am I correct in assuming that if it’s a 1 piece top, then the boards run parallel with the sides c/w bread boards.? And if it has extensions for adding leaves then the boards run parallel to the ends? Thanks.

Need some help please. - 5 replies
Afternoon all. Got a problem…...again. To make the curved backs of the chairs I’m making I needed 8/4 stock and at $10.40/ BF I didn’t really want to go there. So I laminated 2- 4/4 pieces together and cut the curved back. On 2 of the upper crest rails I wasn’t paying attention to the layout of the curve and I cut fro...

Spraying question - 7 replies
Afternoon all. I’m contemplating trying my hand at spraying on my clear coat(s) on my chair build. I just brushed on the first coat and it took forever. I’m using “Varathane Diamond Wood Finish water based”. That’s the stuff I always use and I’m pretty satisfied with the results. The thing is I know nothi...

DIY teak oil - 4 replies
Morning all. I’ve read several articles about making your own teak oil. I tried the equal parts BLO, varnish and thinner. I seemed quite watery. I would think if I add more varnish, or blo or less thinner ,it should thicken up. Any one know of possible issues. I will defiantly try it on a piece of scrap first, but fore warned…...

Bowl questions - 7 replies
Afternoon all. I have 3 bowls I rough turned in Nov. I think. I put them away in the garage in paper bags for drying. I took them out today to find they have developed those “interesting shapes” everyone keeps mentioning. So the 1st question is how do I finish turning an egg shaped bowl? They used to be 5 1/2 to 7” in dia....

segmented bowl question. - 5 replies
Morning all. I have a bunch of strips leftover from “ripping” 4/4 Cherry boards. About 1” square and about 16” long. I was thinking of cutting these to about 1-3/4 L by 1” sq. Cutting the appropriate angle on them. Doing a glue up and creating a segmented bowl blank. The only issue I can see is I’d be cutt...

Block plane restoration - 2 replies
Wandering through an antique store the other day I found a Sargent block plane with an adjustable nose plate. It seemed to be in reasonable condition so I grabbed it ..There was a $25 tag on it, the guy at the till said there was a 5% discount but he took $15 for it. I pretty much just put it on the wire wheel. The blade was a real mess. ...
