A trip to Taiwan and the giant red cypress tree forest

I’m having the good fortune of spending a week in Taiwan this summer, and we had a chance to visit Alishan which is in the central mountains. At the higher altitudes, there is a forrest of giant red cypress trees. At the beginning of our hike we only saw giant stumps which was quite sad as it was a reminder of how much is taken away from everyone when ancient trees are cut for lumber. Yet further along, we started seeing the giants that still stood. The average age of many was about a thousand years old, but the oldest ones in the park were over 2000 years old. Standing next to such a magnificent tree that was alive in the time of the Roman Empire helps give some perspective to thin...
