After showing some of my boxes in “Projects”. I have received some inquiries about the installation of the barrel hinges I sometimes use. I hope this helps for some of you. I know it will be overkill for many of you, so just use what you wish.
With any type hinge, the layout is critical. These hinges are simple to install, but you must get your holes in the right place. If you don’t, I can assure you , you will not like the results, and you will not be able to go back and...

I dont have time to do a lengthy tutorial but I have a few photos and will write a word or two to help you get started.
You should skip the following viewpoints, they will only benefit the smart and good looking ones in the audience.
First off, take a look at Boa and the Art Deco Wing boxes. If you havent done so already, please leave a comment expressing what you do or do not like about them. I always have a few doubts about everything I make,( especially children ) like all woodworker...

There are a number of different factors that should be considered in saw blade selection. Decent quality is essential or you’re sunk from the beginning. The saw’s end performance is largely determined by proper setup and blade selection. You don’t need to spend big bucks to get a good blade, but more expensive blades typically increase your chances of getting good quality. As with many things, there are often a variety of choices that each have merit, so consider what’...

Quite awhile ago SPALM posted his project for a 3D cutting board: http://lumberjocks.com/SPalm/blog/17488 the more I followed his progress the more I wanted to build one myself and thanks to SPALM’s ripping jig and his idea I began building. Along the way I found myself in need of various clamping jigs that would make this project as easy and as accurate as possible.
The journey begins:I built the ripping jig that Spalm built and ripped my stock with the blade set at 30 deg. using sc...

This shows the medallion getting glued in place. I decided to do a loose fit between the medallion and lid on this one due to the fact that I just couldn keep the bloodwood from chipping out even with a new cutter and climb cutting. I have done this before, filling the gap with black epoxy for a shadow line effect. I am using spacers to even out the gap.
Before fitting the medallion I had ran a router around the inside of the box and cut a 3/8” x 3/8” rabbit for the lid to ...

Hello all. Well I seem to have whet the appetite a bit so here goes for a ‘novel’ technique for making mitred boxes. Its a bit like making a box out of paper, like they showed you at school, using a ‘net’. Only in 3D, with wood and a tablesaw (not sissors).
Well first comes the board
Its made from alternating strips of Maple and Rosewood of varying thickness. I won’t bore you with the details on how to make it suffice to say that all the corners must b...

That’s just the Foo Fighter’s track playing endlessly in my head ATM. Good enough title though. Anyways up when the triangles are glued up and re-arranged you get this.
When you re-saw them you get this
I glued and taped the re-saws using a technique David (Patron) calls a glue joint. Put glue on one piece of the joint. Slide them together with a little finger pressure until you get a ‘soft’ lock. Simples! Then tape them until they dry.
Then do the...

Hello here this is my second attempt to blog shell boxes. The last one ended up in the wall art ‘Inverted World’. Well this one is a little less spectacular but is based along the same theme of curves. This time a curved pattern
but it will have stringing introduced between the colour changes as will become apparent as the blog progresses. The main woods are American Black Walnut and Sycamore with Yew stringing. I will be book-matching woods where necessary.
First step i...

Since the original EZ mitre blog there have been variations added. To formalise the adding of new and/or additional methods to the technique I will add updates for now and re-release the whole thing if I ever get time.
The main reason for this update is, as has often been asked, ‘can this technique be done using a table mounted router and ‘v’ groove bit ?’ Up until now I have been reticent to suggest this but I have just this week discovered router bits that are up ...
