Making a Splash at Lee Valley Facebook - 33 replies
About a week or so ago I received an email from the social media person at Lee Valley Tools expressing interest in my marquetry and my school. Apparently she had been tipped off by my good LJ buddy John aka Druid . Well things have heated up a little since then. Last week she posted one of my chevalets in their “whatizit” quiz on ...

What do you see in this live edge Oak? - 27 replies
I was sorting through a large pile of odd pieces of wood I picked up about ten years ago this afternoon and thought this piece deserved to be cleaned up and looked at. I am just not a live edge guy but this one would be hard to treat otherwise so maybe I’m up for a little fun. Here’s what it looked like after cleaning up. ...

BDFT, BF, or FBM? Which do you use? Is it regional? - 43 replies
Ive been curious about this for a while but today while reading another post I decided to ask my fellow LJs and get some answers. Is this another Canadian/American thing like vice/vise? Is it regional East/West?How do you abbreviate “board foot”? I’m from Canada (West coast) and the only one I’ve run into in forty years of...

Teaser - 27 replies
I really wanted to get my latest project posted today ….... but alas there were whitecaps in the bay and I was forced to go sailing. It truly is a tough life. Anyway I decided to post a little teaser photo anyway. The project should be up, barring any unseen catastrophes, in the next couple of days. Any speculation on what it might bee?

What do you see in this veneer? - 57 replies
We’ve played this game before and it was kind of fun so let’s play it again. I have something in mind. Does anyone think like me?

Deadly slow on iPad - 22 replies
Is it just me?Every action seems to take 20- 30 seconds. When I type the cursor moves a few seconds after I finish, then many seconds later the text appears.Only a problem on my iPad, not on my laptop. Also only LJ.Interestingly, the first things that show on a new page are the ads, then a little at a time the page fills in.

This is annoying - 33 replies
Is anyone else getting banner ads across zoomed in project photos like this? I don’t get them all the time and haven’t noticed them on my laptop but they come up from time to time on my iPad. Often they are blocking the picture as in the example. I can’t believe this is other than a glitch. I have no problem with ads, it...

Delta 46-715 lathe, reeves drive problem - 11 replies
My Delta 46-715 lathe has started powering out at high speed. My first thought was a sticky shaft in the Reeves drive, but after disassembling it and cleaning and waxing the shaft it seems that there is very little spring pressure. I can deflect the moving side of the sheave from the high speed position by squeezing the belt together with two fi...

Chevalet Demo at Sooke Fine Art Show - 20 replies
Some photos of my chevalet demos at the Sooke Fine Art Show on Saturday. There was lots of interest and several people took course outlines and registration forms for my new marquetry courses. I’m building four new chevalets to allow me to have five students per class. You can watch the progress in this blog. It was great fu...

I won two awards! - 64 replies
The winners of the 2015 Veneertech Craftsman’s Challenge were announced today at the AWFS Fair in Las Vegas and while I didn’t place “in the money”, I did manage to win special judge’s awards for my jewellery box in the marquetry category and my old Jack in the box in the specialty items category.I’m pretty pl...

Teaching in your shop liabilities - Canada - 23 replies
Last year I gave a chevalet demonstration at a local fine art show where I was asked several times about giving courses etc. This year I have been asked to do a longer demo in which I will include some hands on time for interested viewers. I will be asked again about courses. I would like to pass on some of what I have learned and would like ...

Lost Sketchup Codes - 10 replies
I had an inquiry today about a sketchup code that I posted in this V8 Workbench blog in 2012. Apparently the link no longer works. It is of the “frame …........... frame” format like the youtube embed codes that LJ no longer accepts so I suspect that is the problem. I would like to reinstate the link. Anyone have a workaround?

Blog posting troubles ??? - 89 replies
I tried to post a blog yesterday and got “Application Error” messages a few times before I separated my lengthy, picture heavy blog into two segments. Then it posted OK. Steve (SPalm) noted that he had received the email notices each time my attempts failed. When he looked for them of course they weren’t there. I noticed to...

C clamp to Veneer Press Screw Update - 0 replies
I just posted an update on this blog about making economical veneer press screws from C clamps. It won’t show up as a new blog entry because I added it to the end of the old post as an addendum in order to keep the information together. So …. if you are interested in veneer press screws, check it out.

Goodbye to a good old drill - 30 replies
I hate throwing away perfectly good tools but now and then you have no choice. I just threw out my five or six year old Harbor Freight 18V drill because you can’t buy the batteries any more and because their newer drills are so much nicer and the price of lunch out. For those of you who haven’t been looking, HF has really ...

Anybody tried the $60 HF drill press - 36 replies
I need a small, cheap drill press for square drilling of veneer packets. The only reason that I haven’t bought one of these HF ones before is that the chuck is less than a precision grind and I need to grip #74 drill bits. I just ordered some carbide bits that have 1/8” shanks so that problem should be gone. I’m just wondering ...

Gotta love hot hide glue, a small shop mishap - 12 replies
I had a little glue spill today …... on my workbench top. Back in my epoxy days this would have been a major catastrophe if it had been mixed up and worse if it wasn’t, and expensive too. Even with pva glue it would have been a messy cleanup with an unlikely material recovery prognosis. ...but with HHG, I just waited for it to coo...
