A Surprise from Across the Pacific

A few days ago, just as I was heading out the door for a few days away, a parcel arrived and I just had to take the time to open it. It was from my friend Pete (peteg) in one of my favorite places, New Zealand. Made from native New Zealand rimu, it is a fine gift for a sailor like me ….... a little ship’s wheel clock for desk or mantle …. or maybe even for Friendship’s cabin.

Here is a photo of it beside one of my grandfather’s spurs on our mantle.

............. and it’s signed on the back.

But the surprises didn’t end there. Pete added a little note to the effect that it might be easier for me to re-set it to my time zone rather than him. When I pried the clock out to re-set it I found this.

It’s a real beauty Pete. I will cherish it always and I changed my mind about re-setting it. It will always be set on Auckland time.

Thanks Pete

A very nice present. The sentiments are wonderful and I like that you will be leaving it on Auckland time.

I agree, a very nice gift, carefully and lovingly made! You are right to leave it in NZ time zone.

Wonderful Gift!

Nice thing to do in keeping it set for New Zealand time… but, how do you know when it’s AM or PM? LOL
... I guess once you KNOW it, you’ve got it…

Very nice touch… and Craftsmanship…

For you are a jolly good fellow, you deserve it. A handcraft gift like that is full of warmness as time passes by. Congrats and extend my thanks to our mates.

I’m very pleased to see it arrived OK & undamaged Paul & that you like it.
It was a pleasure of course to send you a small gift in return for the fabulous set of coasters you sent.

This was sent in a semi detached state with the clock wheel attached to the stand with lightweight DS tape so Paul could either fix to a wall or attach permanent to the stand.

Cheers Mate

Wonderful gift, and nice sentiments, they sound old Irish. The one that always amused me was ” I hope your in heaven an hour before the devil knows your dead. Enjoy your timepiece.
