Thought that I would take a moment to say Hello and introduce myself.. I have been lurking around LumberJocks for a little while and thought I would join into the conversation.. The wealth of information, inspiration and skill that you guys share on LumberJocks is fantastic! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for posting and allowing novices like myself to share in your knowledge!

Like my profile says my name is Shawn and I am from the Northern area of Alabama. I am a communications engineer by trade and just moved back to the U.S., after working about 10 years as a field engineer for our uncle Sam. Still moving the family back into our home that has sat relatively empty for much of those 10 years and it needs some TLC to become a home again. After trying to work with local companies to have some of the work done and never finding anyone that can do the work to my satisfaction and after making the mistake of trying to find reasonably priced “good” furniture that is not made of cardboard I have finally decided that to take matters into my own hands! (I must admit that my wife is not as excited about this plan as I am..)

My carport is currently doing double duty as my woodworking “shop” and after being away for so long I am having to replace almost all of my power tools and hand tools. While I plan on building a dedicated shop later this year currently everything that I work with has to be portable and able to store in a small area when not in use.

My woodworking experience level is novice at best, while in college I worked as a carpenter but that was many moon’s ago.. Thanks to modern technology, the internet and mail order delivery of just about anything one could want I hope to rekindle some of the skills that I learned back then and I hope to learn some new ones along the way!

Anyway enough with the biography, need to refill my coffee! Thanks for stopping by and from time to time I will update this blog with my progress!

Welcome aboard. Stick around, and ask questions when you’ve got ‘em. Chances are you’ll get ten different answers at least, but the info and community here is great.

Welcome. Many of us started with a carport “workshop”. I know that I did. In fact, I still like to move my equipment outdoors when the weather permits. Good way to avoid breathing fine dust. Good luck.

Welcome! Many of us wish for a garage shop; count yourself lucky! I am moving from a tiny part of the basement into a garage space in a few months. Super pumped. Glad to see you joined.
