AS the second fastest shake sawyer in history My best friend was Tom Jewett the fastest man I sawed 431 bundles of shakes Tom Jewett sawed 731 bundles he did this at Sol duc shake mill inforks Wa I sawed at washington shake in Longview Wa. my best hour I sawed 82 great bundles of shakes my shakes were sought out by roofers cause they could use all the shakes I was easily the best band saw filer often gettin 200 bundles on one blade I kept a year long average of 300 bundles a day all the while I filed for 6 bandsaws and 3 shingle saws I broke in filing round saws at Beaver well its been a long time but 60 cents a bundle I got 180.00 for sawing and 3 cents a bundle for all shakes and shingles great money for those days mostly 300.00 dollars a day Hard work Yeah buddy lets get some replies on this MY name is Steve Baker Tom Jewett was best man at my wedding

Jack Eddy was the inspector the day I set the record I got your surprise inspection I scored 100% coverage thats 288 inches of coverage I would like for Tommy Jones owner of the largest shake and shingle mill in the world we talked about my coming up to saw and work on gettin the band saws to run better if anyone knows him tell him to give me a call Iam retired as a journeyman welder Got badly injured they hurled 1000 lbs s/s beam on me was dead for 3 minutes now retired for 4 years and I do miss the 60”s and 70”s no cell phones if the young people today had a chance to mdo piece work it would make a better and more productive sawyer those days are gone I used to love to look at ten cord of near taper wood I have cut 13 square of 1/2” shakes out of one cord of wood nice wood we had all the wood that came off Mt.St .Helens those were the days
