An incremental stop block is a stop block for a fence that can be moved in precise increments or can be removed and then returned to exactly the same spot at a later time. This is how Incra got its name. I am too cheap to buy an Incra fence, so instead I spend hours trying to save a buck or two. Go figure. I mostly like the feature of being able to put the stop block exactly back where I had it earlier – and I use pencil marks, not the ruler.
I had posted an incremental stop block a coup...

Bought some 8×24” hvac duct from home depot. 2 feet of 2” pvc. Some sheet metal screws and I hit the shop.
Problem 1: How do you take a rectangle of sheet metal and turn it into a cone?Answer: 71º angle, and 2pir. I wanted an 8 inch top for the cyclone, so an 8 inch circle has about a circumference of 25 inches. I took a 26” long piece of scrap plywood and drilled a hole at both ends. I pivot at one end and draw an arc with a radius of 26”. I dont know if thi...

Obelisks are fun and easy to make and great use of wood from a project that would otherwise be discarded. I made a few and have had some LJ’s ask how I do it, so I thought I’ll take a few pictures and save a few thousand words. I start with a rectangular block with a square base. I find the center on one end and draw line from that center to the corners at the other end. I bandsaw down the lines being careful to always stay outside the line. It is better for finish sanding than a...

I am sure many L Js know this, but I’m writing to those who will know it for the first time.Say we have a disc sanding machine with a table infrnot of the velcro face holding a worn out sanding disc and we want to replace the sanding disc with new one. This article is about replacing the sanding disc without pulling the table away to expose whole the disc.
You need a half page of small news paper and a pair of scissors to cut the paper a little wider than the disc itself and ...

Well, like many of my projects, I got about 80% finished, got distracted by everyday life, and work on the router table ground to a halt. Finally have got around to finishing, stretching a few hours of work into a few weeks. Drawer fronts are pine (cheapest wood I had on hand) finished with several coats of wipe on poly. Knobs are from HD, finished with the same stain I used on the face frame. The central door is 1/4” acrylic with holes to allow airflow through the 5” port on the ...

I was able to get two coats of clear gloss wipe on poly applied to the walnut hollow form yesterday. This morning I got an early start and applied the third and final coat. I will let this dry for a couple of days and then buff it out with the Beall system. I do track the time and expense that I put into each piece. For this project the wood was free and the only expense I had was in shop supplies and electricity. A total of 4 hours was spent on the entire project which included wood pre...

I got an early start today as I want to finish this piece and get two more rough turned. Lumberjocks Steven and Roper both brought up good points about putting a plastic bag over the piece if it was going to sit overnight to prevent cracks and checks. Since this wood has been stored in the barn since early in the year I decided to not cover it and see what would happen. Inspected the piece this morning and there were no checks, cracks or splits – probably wouldn’t gamble again ...

This will be an attempt to detail the steps I take to turn a hollow form. The wood that will be used is from some walnut that I was able to get early this year and has been stored in an old barn. This is the block of walnut after I have chain sawed it to rough shape. The piece is 14 inches across and 13 inches high.
I have circle templates in various sizes made from 1/4” hardboard that I use to size my blanks before they go to the band saw. I used a 12” template nailed ...
