Pen Finish

447 days ago by Grumpy | 8 comments »

I was at the Canberra ‘Working with Wood’ show last weekend & was talking to one of the wood turners, I think he was with the ACT Woodcraft Guild. He was turning a pen & had a great finish on it. I asked him about the finish & it was simply linseed oil & super glue. That got me interested so I did a little websearching & found this Utube video on how it’s done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBTbCOL4npg

Turning Green

531 days ago by trifern | 12 comments »

This is my first attempt at turning green wood. I have been encourage and coached by a friend and new Lumberjock, Terry. I roughly turned the blank into the shape I wanted. I left the wall thickness approximately 10% of the bowl diameter. I may have left a little too much? After turning the bowl inside and out, I submerged it in denatured alcohol. I will let it soak for 24 – 36 hours, flash the alcohol off for 2 -3 hours, wrap it in a brown paper grocery bag, date it, and allow it to dr...

Wood Library - Boxwood

558 days ago by GaryK | 7 comments »

Boxwood – Buxus sempervirens Long used to make model ships in the 15th and 16th centuries . These ships were then used as the models to make full size ships. Stanley Tools has long used it for their folding rules. Also used for engravings for printing applications and used for musical instruments. It has extremely fine texture, easy to carve and turn but difficult to split, color uniform light yellow. It’s also very strong and hard. It will not splinter. There are a lot o...

Swirl Inlay Using Table Saw Jig

593 days ago by Kerux | 22 comments »

Here is a tutorial on the “Swirl” inlay that I use, but with a twist, this time I made a little jig for the table saw. As you can see it is a small simple sled. I then took the sled and marked a line of what I thought would be a good angle for most pen blanks. I don’t know what the exact angle is… I just eye balled it. It is more than 45 degree’s of that I’m sure of. I measure up the blank as seen here so that a little less than half the blank ...

Tools I make (sharpening stones, planes and irons) #1: Making a honing stone

709 days ago by Daren Nelson | 17 comments »

I mentioned in one of my project post where I pictured a small hand plane that I made in my shop that I also make the irons and sharpening stones. I of course make the wood too, since I have a sawmill. Others showed interest in more details, so here they are. I did not know where to start. I am starting with a honing stone I “made”. It did not work out exactly as planned. It is a very good stone and I will use it for honing razors personally and in my business (I run a small sh...

Turning a Pen

851 days ago by mot | 25 comments »

Hi Folks, WayneC posted a great blog entry on Turning a Pen with outstanding instruction and resources. Using Wayne’s blog and resources, I started turning a few pens and have found a lot of enjoyment in a quick little project in the shop. I have limited shop time and while I stall on a large entertainment centre as a feature in our home theatre, as well as trying to find the time for the summer entries, I’ve been spending some quality time with my lathe. With the help of ...
