Good evening LJ’s this week has been a busy one as I have had a little more time to do work on my Marketing and ordered a new Delta Mortiser to add to my growing arsenal of tools. One of the most interesting things occurred this weekend that changed my marketing perspective forever !!!! Friday night I was offered to go to a local double A league baseball game The Akron Aeros well what better place to hand out fliers right ? After all they fit my target market !!! Five fliers later two wound up in a garbage can less than 50ft away, one guy accepted it warmly and the rest stayed with me due to people not wanting fliers!!!! Toady I took a sample case over to a friends house an unfinished cabinet and wound up getting asked if I would build a bookcase for that person!!!!
I asked myself WTHJH What the heck just happened !! After careful analysis & coming to realize people don’t care about a piece of paper you hand them, they want to see your work and if they can see it they most likely will buy it or at least ask for a card. The selling points of your work are as good as what you can show!! Photos are nice but with the advent of the computer and the internet it is easy to touch up ( and I put this lightly) work you have done!! Making a poor Quality piece or someone else’s your Fine Piece of Furniture !!!! ( Know about the stock photos available for you web site) Point made, people want to touch, feel, and play with Quality to see and have something to go with what the salesman or woodworker has said
Does this say I need to build full size and then rent a bus to show my work? NO NO AND NO!!! Build it to half scale or quarter scale, you have less cost, no need for a show room, and you can time yourself on how long it takes you to build saving on lost time or over cost by Knowing the time it takes you to build, and finish a piece, all it takes is adding materials for the full scale version in and viola you have instant price!!!! Models also fit in the back of the car and can be shown at anytime to prospective clientele. After this little eye opener I am tasking in a different direction.
and I will keep you posted on how this works. Until next week take care :)

Well this certainly sounds like very good advice. I’m still working at the plant full time and have not considered doing outside work but I can only image how hard it must be to get the ball rolling when someone does decide to do this. I wish you all the success in the world for developing your business.
