If you have looked at or read anything about my projects, I’m a Tung Oil guy. Except when the wife/boss wants something else. Not a big fan of the finishing part of woodworking.

So anyway, the boss wanted me to make a drafting table for her to do takeoffs at work. It needed to be
1.5” x 53” x 37” and adjustable. No problem. Went to Rockler and picked up the hardware. Home Depot for the 3/4” MDF. Get home and 3 hours later we are ready to finish.

I started out with a brush on Poly. Not a good idea. Brush marks everywhere. I saw hours of sanding and more coats in my future. If I have to put more coats on won’t there be more brush marks? Like I said not a big fan of finishing. (sorry Bruce)

After thinking about it for a few days and calming down with a little BBQ. I thought back over the last three years of going to the wood show and stopping at the Earlex booth and always walking away empty handed. Even this year I walked away having a hard time justifing the $350.00.

Not anymore. I went down to Woodcraft and bought the Earlex HVLP PRO. As my daughter likes to say OMG what a unit. Took it home read the instructions, (no comments please) went out did some sanding and then fired that baby up. All I have to say is sweeeeeeet.

I switched over to General Finish water base simi-gloss and in the day and half I had left in the weekend put on five coats and may never use Tung Oil again. Even with a few brush marks remaining before I started, the finished flowed out and filled 98% of them. The gun can spray at any angle, has one easy to use adjustment and it simply put, Rocks. The cup has a Teflon coating so, clean up is super easy.

Granted I was spraying flat surfaces and not anything with legs or sides. I have a feeling that with this setup that has very little over spray and with the water base products out these days, so no nasty fumes, I have a new method for finishing.

So, to all you folks that dislike finishing like me. This spray system is well worth saving up for. I can’t wait to complete my next project so I can do some more spraying.

Wow, I feel your dislike of finishing. Dislike is a nicer term than I usually use.

I almost pulled the trigger for one of these at the Wood Show. I played with one for 15 minutes in the show booth. So….. I guess this is my next purchase. Dang I hate my brain.

Thanks for the encouragement,

Thanks for that encouragement! I’ve gotten so frustrated I’ve been thinking about taking my pieces down to the local auto body shop and letting them spray, but it seems like I need to set up a space that I can make relatively dust free and just bite the bullet.

Which will bring me to the other issue that’s going to plague my shop shortly: You can never have too many clamps (though I’m getting close), or a big enough compressor…
