One of my Christmas gifts is due in tomorrow, a Veritas Mk.II Honing Guide, my kids got it for me via a gift card. I made these Glass Sheets along with the honing guide to use in the Scary Sharp system. I use the 3M micro-abrasives as specified over at Brent's Sharpening Pages.
The glass is 3/32”x6”16” and the boards are from a pile of oak shorts I purchased a while back. The boards are 3/4”x6 1/2”x19” and the dowels are to keep the sheet from moving during the honing process. The dowel rods will go into a sheet of plywood that will be clamped to my work bench. This plywood sheet will have the matching holes for the glass sheets and will protect my workbench as the sharpening process is quite messy.

I use the Veritas MkII on a diamond plate to get the correct angle and i do the sharpening on my sharpening station that I designed and built.
It was very inexpensive and no sandpaper to buy.
PS. I’ve used the scary sharp system and this one is a whole lot faster.
