Some use for old wood.

We are re-doing our back deck and I have piles of old 2×6pt wood that had seen better days, so the gears started turning.

My wife has gotten into potting some plants around the house and needed a place to store materials and a place to work in lieu of on the ground or putting potting dirt all over my shop work bench : ).

I took the “best” of the boards and ran them through the planner until I had a nice surface at 1 1/4”, then ran one side through the jointer to get a square edge. The other side was cut at the table saw. This 20 year old pine was hard as heck on the planner blades, I don’t know if this is normal for pine to harden over time or what.

I was unsure how to attach the boards edge to edge. So this being a project for the wife and her wanting it soon, I needed a new tool. I talked her into letting me purchase the Kreg pocket hole master system as it was “required” for the project. Lucky for me it was on sale that week at the local Woodcraft store :).

The pocket hole system worked very well and I am real happy with the results, plus it getting a new tool is always a plus! On the sides and the top I did not like seeing the ends of the boards so I cut some 1/8” strips, soaked them in the pool until they were bendable and stapled them off to finish the ends. I still need to make a front door for it, but it’s 90% complete.

Other than the mental image I had in my head of what I wanted, this was just put together as I went along. I still have about another 100 2×6 boards to do something with…..not sure where they will wind up, but I am sure they will be put to good use.

needed a place to hang towels when getting out of the shower, thought it would be neat to have the towel owners first inital above their hook as not to get them mixed up (my kids are still small so they use our bathroom). Miters got better then on my scroll saw project, not much in the way of “wow” but useful project.

some of my first pens, that is one addictive project!!! I have more pens than I could use in a life time !

present for my wonderful mother-in-law. My first try at any type of door ! turned out pretty good. Wish I had paid more attention to grain pattern on the recess though….

had just started wood working when I tried my hand at scroll work. Need to work on my mitered corners !!
