Clamping Irregular Shaped Surface

I was working in the shop today trying to wrap up a pair of boxes I was making for my sister & niece. I was working on completing the lids and very near final construction of the boxes themselves. I wanted to put corner splines in the lid for decoration/reinforcement. My intent was to have them flush with the bottom of the lid. After I cut the slots for th splines & went to glue them together I realized the mistake I had made…...how to clamp the splines when I had already routered the profile into the lid edges. ^&$#@! After thinking for a while I got the idea that I could use a scrap piece of 1” dow foam on the bottom & it would compress to the shape...
