The Spline Cutting Jig
I use this jig to make all my splines. Basically it is set up to use the band saw to cut triangles out of a long thin strip of wood. It is just a board with a runner for the guide slot and another board fastened at a 45 degree angle. Cutting small pieces on a table or radial saw is a disaster. Your fingers wind up in wrong places and the small pieces fly all over the shop (not good). This is a job for the band saw! If it is done well the splines will look ...

Not so long ago I blew my brains out on Christmas building. Starting in mid September then I made 21 different things, for a bunch of real different people. It was worth it yes, but I was mentally finished by the end.
This year is wiser, lazier and lighter with only 5 types, some 9 pcs. but good ones, mostly culled from my favourites at LJ.
Here are three.
As is my custom I make something for my boss each year, by way of saying thank you for letting me have free access to our shop t...

Next weekend is Labor Day in the U.S. That means picnics and barbecues! Here’s a simple project you can make this weekend and have ready for next weekend. It’s a little caddy to hold paper plates and napkins. The center divider slides to keep the napkins from blowing away.

Yep, a project that none of you are likely to make. But forget that it’s for yarn; it’s really just a container that can be modified to fit any storage need. Also, a simple jig for making finger joints on the table saw.
Read more about this project here.

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works.
The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs
Then this week I was making a tea box for a friend and when...

I have had several people PM me who were having trouble with the details of the integral hinge in this blog so I’ve done a sketchup to try to clarify it. I hope I haven’t just made it more confusing. If this doesn’t clear it up, I’ll just keep trying.
Here’s the link:

I’ve added the sketchup link to the first blog page so it’s all in one place and easy to ...

As part of my workbench project I needed to mill up a somewhat large piece of lumber for the main chop on my face vise. It was larger than my 6” Jointer could handle. I needed to find an easy way to mill the 2 large faces. I have been wanting to make a Planer Sled for awhile now, so that’s what I did.
I based mine on one Keith Rust did for Fine Woodworking “Flatten Boards without a Jointer”. This article is available at finewoodworking.com, but it is only available if you have a ...

Aside from woodworking, cooking is one of my passions. Well, that and eating. For what it’s worth on a woodworking forum, I gravitate toward Thai, Indian, and Mexican food. Mexican food is something I make at least twice a week: authentic Yucatan as well as quick Tex-Mex.
It dawned on me recently how much I was spending on tortillas at the store and decided to start making my own. It’s really easy and they taste better, but you need a tortilla press to simplify the process even...
