What the wife wants I guess she gets #2: Entertainment Center #2

Once I had the cabinet home I (she) had to decide how she wanted to set up all the electronics. We (she) decided it would be better if both the top and bottom sections had doors on them, and we needed to put a couple shelves in to hold the dvd player, vcr, etc…

Space in the upper opening is a little tight so there will be just enough room for a shelf, and by taking out one of the drawers we can put another shelf in the lower cabinet.

This is what I got accomplished shortly after all the decisions were made.

I basically took the drawer completely apart routed dados for seperaters and then used a picture hanging bit to route groves in the new bottoms to hold some dividers.

Here is the cabinet after I removed the top drawer and back. The back was taken out to create access to route a dado for the shelf. I haven’t yet removed the trim on the front.

What the wife wants I guess she gets #1: She wants a new TV cabinet

Just so we are clear I am actually almost done with this project. I’m just now getting around to blogging it.

When my wife and I got married we were the typical college kids. We wanted the entertainment center that showed of the electronics. Now a few years, and a few kids down the road we want to minimize the TV.

I showed her the armoir that dennis built a while back and she said it didn’t impress her, so I decided to try and come up with something else.

Well last August we’re visiting our families that live 3 1/2 hours away. We went to a thrift store looking for something for the kitchen. Of course we didn’t find what we were looking for, and decided to wander through the rest of the store. I saw a beat up TV cabinet

and thought, “If my wife hadn’t shot down the design already I’ld show her this and start taking measurements.” A little later my wife comes up to me and says she wants to show me something, and takes me back to the same cabinet. She likes it, wants to buy it, and have me fix it up. I doesn’t matter we are 3 1/2 hours away from home, and didn’t bring the truck.

We the wife is alway right or so I’ve been told repeatedly. We buy the cabinet, borrow her grandma’s truck, and take the it to my parents until we can figure a way to get it home. (I ended up having my brother bring it up to his in-laws (2 months later) who live an hour and a half away, and picked it up from there.)

The cabinets made of particl board, missing some hardware and trim pieces, the drawer bottoms all have water damage, and two brace boards are broken amoung other things. But if it makes the wife happy (and so far it has) then I quess its worth it.

Thorsen Table Challenge #2: the next entry

Well, the state mandated testing is over, so now I have a little more time on my hands. I have been working on the table. As of right now the legs are sized as are the approns. Currently I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate a hidden drawer. It is giving me a harder time than it should.

I also have to figure out what I’m going to do for the shelf. As I was at my parents house last weekend delivering my dad’s table (which he loved it by the way) I was helping in his shop. In the scrap bin I found these:

So now I have to decide which will work best, the shelf I’ve already started on and is almost finished or one of the above boards.

Thorsen Table Challenge #1: It's a start

The whole reason I joined Lumberjocks was because I wanted to get some information about the Thorsen Table Challenge. After spending countless hours here I decided I better at least attempt a table.

SWMBO said that I could only build a table if the wood choice matched the bedroom furniture (The Wife’s Dresser). So sorry Obi, but it is going to be made out of pine. I decided to add some Cedar for a contrasting wood

Just to do something different I went with a brick laid pattern.

This is the top glued up and the bread board ends attached, along with the aprons and a few other pieces.

Unfortunately as a school teacher I have to start getting my students ready for the end of year testing. That’s going to take up a lot of my time for the next couple weeks, so I don’t know how much more I’ll get done for awhile.
