Built: July-2005
Size: 30’ x 40’-6”, 9’ ceiling
Exterior: Tin Siding
Heat: North Iowa winters burrr, radiant floor heat and small wood burner, (solar heat is in the works)
A/C: none
One hole outhouse: 1 (wife wants a log cabin home, she said she would settle with this for now)
Lumber (Oak) for this was salvaged from a bunker they store corn in at the local
elevator. It went up green about 8 years ago. Boards are about 1-1/8” thick.
Major Tools: General 10” contractor, General 6” jointer, Grizzly 14” and 17” bandsaw, Grizzly 1-1/2 hp dust collector, Clark 130 amp welder (doesn’t work well on wood but does come in handy once in a while)
The wife and I built the shop with the help of our two sons; they are 16 and 18, and my father. We have always wanted a house with a porch, so the summer of 2006 we added the porch to the shop and we also built one on my parents house (dad wouldn’t take money for helping build the shop), they spend many nights sitting on theirs. We also spend a lot of weekends just sitting and watching what traffic does go by. Rutland has a population around 120. If you do not have a porch I highly recommend it. The shop came about because I could not move some of the equipment around in the small garage we had, 14’ x 30’ non-insulated. a lot of floor moisture problems in winter when heated. Keep the new shop floor at around 65 degrees, love it. Winter 2005 cost around $600 to heat. Added the wood burner summer of 2006, so we will see how this affects the heat bill.
I will post more photos later, the building towards the back with the porch roof is the shop.

Very nice “rejuvinating” job, and thanks for all the information. Lots of help.

Hi Joel
I really like the porch on your shop. It really dresses it up. I was planning on putting one on my shop when I get it built. I think I would rather sit in your outhouse than some others I have sat in. Great looking heater. I had a pot belly stove in my shop in North Dakota.
