The French Drawer Bottom Explained

I put together this video to show how I make a drawer with a “French Bottom”. As I state during the video, I have been making drawers this way since the late 70’s. I have been unable to find any reference to this construction on line (without paying) or in my collection of literature. I will keep looking. I have this image in my head that I think is from a book about furniture construction.

It would really be nice if I could learn how to use Google SketchUp and put up a drawing of this drawer.

Enjoy the video and feel free to ask questions.

OK, I decided to sign up for Fine Woodworking Online so I could see the article about French Drawer Bottoms. My wife has been bugging me to spend the money because she feels the magazine has been part of my woodworking from the start. Turns out the article was from Fine Woodworking #9. Only a few copies of the magazine were kept (obviously not #9) when I left woodworking in 1986 so that is why I couldn’t find the reference. So, there it is, I can rest easy tonight.

Otherwise known as a “drawer slip”.

Thanks rwyoung,

I have learned something from this. I googled “drawer slip” and got this link which is really nice.

I can’t wait to make more drawers with a couple ideas this all gives to me. Thanks for the heads up.
