Wixey WR525 Remote Digital Readout

This is a great addition for your drill press. I first came across the wixey digital readout in an article in Woodsmith December 2008 No. 180 issue, and saved it in my drill press file. Then after agonizing over set ups for months I finally decided to buy the unit. The article does provide some basic ideas to attach components to you drill press. I have had it for several years and it has worked great. The only problem I had was operator error! The battery drains if you forget to...

A World of Difference from the Stock Blade

A World of Difference from the Stock Blade

I mentioned this blade in my review of the Scheppach Track Saw. It gave me tearout-free cuts in pretty much everything I have tried with the track saw. Just look at the closeup of the two blades. On the left you have the stock blade. It is probably a $5 blade. On the right is the Freud. Much more carbide, much sharper carbide, and a much better cut. The only possibly negative of this blade is the price. At $45, it isn’t cheap, but it’s quite a bit less than Festool blades, a...

The Luthier's Best Friend can help all handymen/women and woodworkers too!

I suggested some time ago that Lee Valley carry luthier’s binding tape, as it has usefulness for many of us on a day to day basis. After some searching they were able to track down a supplier and have offered it for sale on their store. Here’s an example of I use it in the guitar shop: This tape is quite simply indispensable for any woodworker and likely most home’s toolbox. The tape is strong enough to wrap around a joint and not break, while having some elasticit...

Fabricating iGaging DRO for 15" Planer

I wanted my planer to have digitized measuring but did not want to spend a couple hundred doing this. I recently purchased a Digital Read Out …DRO…from iGaging. I got it on amazon for $33.50 plus free shipping. When I received the unit, the lcd screen protector was cracked. The LCD protector is actually glass. I contacted iGaging and they responded very fast to my email, and after a few questions they shipped out another unit the next business day. Even though I live in Florid...

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

I’m new to turning, and it didn’t take long to figure out I needed a way to sharpen tools. I picked up a slow-speed (1725 rpm) grinder when Woodcraft had them on sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been watching YouTube videos posted by Eddie Castelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdchP8ZYUCc), and decided to try a sharpening system he builds … the Blawkhawk Sharpening System. It sells for a fraction of the price of other systems, and delivers excellent results. With...

Kerfmaker uses

Kerfmaker uses

I broke down and bought one of these gadgets despite the high price since I planned to give it a lot of use. It works as advertised but I had a different application in mind than cutting half laps or kerfs. I wanted to use it for its opposite function, one not advertised, making tenons. I understand that Bridge City plans to introduce a new tool for this purpose, but I think they don’t understand that the Kerfmaker can already do this. The key is to invert your thinking and instead of u...
