Aniline Dyes - food safe? - 3 replies I’d like to add some brighter colors to a cutting board project. Assuming the project is finished with food safe finish like general salad bowl finishing oil is the dye ok? |

harbor freight moisture meter (digital readout) - 5 replies I’ve read through a lot of posts and reviews but not many people seem to have purchased the 96497-1VGA $20 moisture meter. This is the grey pin digital readout model, not the LED. I know the spiel about budget moisture meters, but the next one to consider is nearly 10 times the price (mini ligno $110, HF $16 after coupon) and I am not... |

router base plates - tricks for aligning screw holes? - 11 replies I like to make my own router baseplates (mostly out of clear plastic) but I have a #$%!@# of a time getting the screw holes to be accurate. Any tricks? I know about the template bushing trick, but I don’t have a problem holding the plate center, I have a problem getting the screw holes marked and drilled accurately. |

measuring board feet when purchasing rough sawn lumber - 11 replies When I am purchasing rough-sawn lumber that is cut to a variety of thicknesses, what is the usual convention for board thickiness for BF calculation? I know milled lumber usually rounds up 13/16 or 7/8” to 1”. Does rough sawn do the same or is it actual thickness? I am considering purchasing some rough sawn lumber from someone... |

Chuck key for Craftsman drill press - 7 replies I have an older 1/2 HP Craftsman floor model drill press and need a chuck key. None of the ones at the big box stores (nor even Sears store) are big enough. Is there a way to determine what size of key I need? Ordering Sears Parts replacement for $25 is out of the question. I can get a whole new chuck with key for that price. |

Parallel-Pro Clamps from Peachtree - slipping? - 2 replies I bought four of the 59” Parallel Pro clamps from Peachtree a month or so back. One of them slips under any pressure when turning the knob. I am sure this is not technique since only one of the four does this. It would be a hassle to ship one clamp back. Is there an easy fix for this? http://www.ptreeusa.com/edirect_110708.htm |

shop lighting with low ceilings - 4 replies In my basement workshop my ceilings are 80” from floor to the bottom of the ceiling joists. The shop is 400 sq ft. I am trying to find a lighting solution that will not extend below the joists very much if at all. It would also need to be “armored” against things moving around, and allow a little bit of room for soundproofi... |

Workshop walls, construction and soundproofing - 5 replies Workshop walls, construction and soundproofing I am finally framing in my basement shop. My only interior wall is stagger-studded on 24” centers for sound isolation. The outside of this wall is 5/8 drywall, and the inside (shop-side) is yet TBD. Some insulation will be in the wall itself. I really hate the practice of locating stu... |

Edge Jointer: Tapering Problem? - 10 replies My edge jointer cuts the front of a work piece more that the back. That is, if I feed the piece through several times there is a noticeable taper created that begins thinner at the front and ends thicker at the back. It’s actually an ancient Delta/Milw model that’s on the old ww machines website, so it needs a little TLC every on... |

soundproofing new basement shop - 1 reply Can’t seem to find the right place to post this, so I guess this is a “project”. I am designing a new basement shop, and soundproofing is extremely important. I’ve read up on STC, special types of drywall, double-stud walls, resilient channel and all the various other soundproofing methods and materials. I am shoot... |

What to use for wheels? - 7 replies I am designing a cartish-sort-of-thing to wheel our trash barrels up and down our driveway for trash days. It will be exposed to the elements 24/7. I’d like to build my own wheels (about 10” in diameter – finally build and learn to use a router trammel) but I am concerned that neither dimensional cedar nor PT pine/spruce wil... |
