Part 1: Project overview and current status
Overview The current project I’m working on is a military flag display case. My grandfather passed away last February. He served in the Navy during WWII and was stationed in the Pacific. I’ve had this on the to-do list for awhile. This is my first project that I am starting from scratch with a blank sheet…although it’s a pretty simplistic design. Part 2: Drawer joints completed
Was able to scrounge up some time to officially start making sawdust for this project. I started by ripping the blanks for the drawer parts from the 1/4” cherry. Even though most of the drawer will be hidden most of the time, I wanted to crosscut the parts to allow the grain pattern to flow around the drawer. I stacked the 2 blanks prior to cross-cutting to insure matching lengths: I blue taped the ends of the blanks to help prevent chipout. The new box joint jig I made has...
Part 3: Drawer boxes completed
Everyone warned me that LJ was addicting…but did I listen…nooo! What free time I did manage to get outside of surfing LJ, I finished up the drawer boxes: They are unfinished at this point…picture was taken right after the mineral spirits wipe down. I’m going to wait until the drawers are completed with the fronts and handles before applying the finish. I did opt to go with the 1/4” vs. 1/8” thickness for the bottom.
