I made a bottle stopper out of Tulipwood. My wife liked it and suggested I make some Easter eggs for our two nephews who are also God-children. Never to turn down an authorized trip to the shop, I agreed. First was to get some Tulipwood and cut...

Ok, it’s over. I was unable to pull off my project. I was making a full-scale soprano ukulele. 2×4 material does not bend without splitting, cracking and scorching. I enclose the following picture of the neck just to show I was serious....

Not much of a first entry, but I got my 2×4 today. I darned near grabbed a ten footer by mistake, but it looked too long. Wanting to strictly adhere to the rules I replaced it with a standard stud. I won’t get much done before Christmas...

I checked out your projects and they are all great. Sometimes I get jealous seeing all the nice wood everyone els uses because I never buy any wood and only use what I have milled. O well, maybe some day.

Thanks so much for your comment on my project. You asked if I ever do anything small, the smallest thing I could ever remember doing was turning wooden pens. Most of what I do is for the company I work for and most of those jobs seem to be on the large side. My brother-in-law does woodworking also and he likes small projects so this keeps peace in the family.

no there wasn’t a special tool involved, just the standard tool that come with the lathe or a kit you purchase. It wasn’t as tricky as it looks, it just requires a little bravery and patience.

Yes I do use those “figure eight things”. They work perfectly to deal with wood movement, are inexpensive, and no hassle to mount. I use a forstner bit to make a nice receptacle on the top of the side stretchers. I have tables that are years old with these mounts with no problems. I use them on all my tables.

Thanks for the welcome. I’m a member of many online communities and this is the first time I’ve had so many different people actually welcome a new member. I’ve only recently discovered the site and I’ve already found it very useful for a novice woodworker. This site seems like a fantastic community and I can’t wait to join in with questions, projects and someday insight.
Thanks,
Pat

wow, the parlor guitar looks great. I am a big fan of parlor guitars. I have a few larivee parlor models in my studio, most rosewood back and sides. I love them. I like to record with the smaller bodies, the sound is more focused. With the right mic it can sound amazing, both in a dense mix and with a smaller arrangement as well.

rikkor, thanks for the welcome… MAN, that guitar on your site is awesome. I have it in my plans to build one some day so I may pick your brain. I’ve played since i was 10 years old so it would really be something to have a guiltar that I had built myself.

Hi Rikkor,
Thank you for welcoming me. I am just buying my house and moving in next month. Will just be setting up a new workshop. Have done woodworking off and on for about 20 years. Just never had a permanent setup. So I thought I would join a site and hopefully be able to learn something more. Don’t really plan to do any major projects except the workshop itself right now. But expect to have lots of fun soon. Talk to you again soon.
