I love my Steel City helical head planer. After reading many reviews on every portable planer, I went with Steel City. Reading some of the reviews on it, just about everyone said that it is was over protected with grease/oil.I took off all my blades and soaked in mineral spirits overnight and then used a toothbrush to clean the cylinder itself. Even after soaking, cleaning I still get some oil residue 6 months later, but slowly going away. Just be patient and clean as best you can after a...

ARE WE GOING BACK TO THESE? A PUZZLING QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED FOR ME, AFTER READING TODD’S REVIEW OF THE STEEL CITY 13” PORTABLE PLANER WITH HELICAL HEAD. 2 DAYS AGO I CALLED HW AND WAS ALL EXCITED BECAUSE I HAD DECIDED TO BUY ONE OF THOSE PLANNERS. I HAD JUST GONE THRU 2 DEWALT PLANERS ,A 733 AND 735 AS THE INSIDES JUST CAME UNDONE.THAT’S ANOTHER STORY FOR WHICH I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER FOR THESE PUZZLING CIRCUMSTANCES. I finally got the opportunity to buy one and I took delivery of it about a week after Christmas. I bought it from Highland Hardware..they had it on sale for $499.00, and $48.00 shipping. It came UPS, and it was really heavy. Hand trucked it down to my shop and opened it up. Packed very well, and didn’t seem damaged at ...

It sure seems I went on a bit of a binge, but this is the 3rd and final tool purchase for the foreseeable future. It wasn’t one I had planned on like the sander, it was one of necessity. You see my previous planer was a Delta 12 ½” factory reconditioned unit that I picked up for a song. It did yeoman’s work for close to 10 years. It surfaced 1000s of feet of pine tent poles, 600 board feet of ash in one weekend and other such adventures. It bogged down occasionally and more often than I ...
