Rikon 70-220VSR Midi Lathe

Bought this new from Woodcraft on 5/1/2018. Worked absolutely wonderful for a few months – weekend wood turner projects. Started experiencing some delayed starting and inconsistent rpm on motor after about 5 months. Called and spoke to Rikon and they acknowledged that they have a motor problem in some of these – specifically the brush/armature interface. They were very nice about it and indicated that a new motor is forthcoming at no charge but have to wait up to 3 months before a...

Not just a pen lathe

Not just a pen lathe

I purchased this lathe at Johnson’s lumber wood expo in Sept. I can’t tell you how much needed to be assembled as I got the last one and it was the show model. I just completed turning a segmented bowl and it worked great. It did slow down if I got too aggressive but as long as watched that no problems. So far I have turned several Christmas ornaments, 3 lidded bowls, and two segmented bowls. The lathe has performed great. I added the bed extension and the fit was ok but needed to...

Rikon 70-220 VSR Customer Service

I must brag on Rikon and their customer service. My lathe variable speed indicator stopped working. 1st Rikon sent me a new cable and that worked for a couple days and stopped working again.Rikon sent me a new mother board and switch assembly pronto; which I promptly crossed wires and fried. I contacted Rikon told them what I did and asked how much for a new one. Rod Burrow from Rikon whom I’ve been working with sent me another new one and no cost with an invite to call before I install....

After a couple of months of turning I think I can write a decent review of my new Midi Lathe. To date I’ve only been practicing turning some spindles and learning to work with the “Easy Lathe Tools”. I just purchased a pen kit and some bottle stoppers to make as soon as my fingers heal from the band saw incident. I stopped in my local Woodcraft store to look at lathes and when I saw this one I just fell in love with it. I was very surprised to see a Rikon lathe with virtuall...

problems but fast customer service

problems but fast customer service

I purchased a new Rikon 70-220VSR lathe on the 11th of November 2014 from Woodcraft. I turned a few pieces and the Rikon stopped working. I called customer service and they sent a new control board via two day mail. It took very little time to install and the lather worked like a charm. One caveat, you must stop the motor and wait for the speed indicator to clear prior to changing from forward to reverse of vice-verso. Cheers for the customer support for the fast identification and deliver...

Could have been so much better....

I will start this review with an email that I sent to the Rikon Tech support team about a week ago. “I have had my 70-220VSR lathe for about a month now. First let me say that the customer service has been great. The CS department has done what they need to do so far to take care of me. I originally ordered the lathe through Woodcraft. The lathe showed up in a timely fashion. After unboxing, I conducted a function check and noticed that the spindle was not spinning true. I remo...

After a couple of weeks of near full time turning I think I can write a decent review of my new Midi Lathe. To date I’ve turned a couple of bowls, several pens and some Christmas ornamentsTo tell the truth I stopped in my local Woodcraft store to look at the Jet 1221. I was very surprised to see a Rikon lathe with virtually identical specs. The 70-220 VSR is an electronically controlled variable speed lathe, with reverse. It advertises a 12 1/2 inch swing over the bed, a 1 hp motor, e...
