Completed the new shooting board to go with my new plane from LN using the plans that came with the plane. As soon as the board was finished I started grabbing various pieces of scrap to try out the new plane. The 51 is heavy, the momentum helps move the plane with skewed blade through all types of wood with ease. Included in my testing today were pieces of Mahogany, Hard Maple, QSWO, and pine. It all depends. Here is my philosophy for buying tools, if I say to myself “Gee it would be nice to have XXXXX tool so I could make this operation easier” 3 times, then I buy the tool. I do it this way because I know that I will be using the tool, and it makes my woodworking easier. Shooting a board is one of those operations that seem simple enough, just make a shooting board and shave the end grain with a plane. THe problems comes with the execution. At least for me.
